Corrib came away from Castlebar with a precious 4 points on Saturday night. In an 8pm kick off in ideal weather and pitch conditions. The only weather condition of note to contend with was dew making the ball skippy at times.
This contest was bruising from the outset. Some big hits made by both sides made this an entralling contest until the end. Corrib went in front first with a penalty and followed up with 2 great tries from Evan Flynn. Evan’s second try was a kick and chase down the right wing and he showed great turn of pace to get to the ball first for the try. Castlebar dominated the scrums but Corrib still weren’t conceding turn overs due to the great work done at no 8, Mairtin Lee.
Castlebar came back into the game in the second half after applying sustained pressure and levelled up the game in the third quarter with a converted try. They then took the lead with a penalty and looked favourited to seal the deal. However with 10 still on the clock, 2nd centre Ronan Casey took a loose pass of the ground and had plenty of work to do before touching the whitewash left of the posts at the club house end. This was converted by Evan Flynn and left Castlebar stunned. The score was now 27 – 24 to Corrib who were relentless in their body on the line tackling all night led by Captain, Hubert Creavan and pack leader Mairtin Lee and this helped hold onto a surprise away win.
Corrib travel to neighbours Tuam for another under the lights clash next Friday night. Tuam are away to Ballyhaunis today and will need a win to make up for last weeks drubbing against Castlebar.
