ABOUT ENNISKILLEN TOWN

Enniskillen is the county town of Fermanagh. Fermanagh is one of the six counties in Northern Ireland and part of the U.K. Enniskillen town is uniquely situated in the centre of the county between Upper and Lower Lough Erne. Enniskillen has a population of approximately 14,000 people. Enniskillen is also the seat of local government for Fermanagh District Council.

The name Enniskillen comes from the Irish Inis Ceithleann meaning island of Cathleen, who was an Irish mythological character.

Enniskillen Castle situated beside the river Erne on the island of Enniskillen was built almost 600 years ago by the Maguires’. It was strategically a very important site throughout history guarding one of the few passes into Ulster. In the 17th century it became an English garrison and later served as part of a military barracks.

There are now two museums on the site which is a mere couple of hundred yards from the Enniskillen town centre and a favourite call for visitors.

The island town has long been known as a favourite tourist destination. For anyone visiting Enniskillen one of their abiding memories will be the town’s proximity to Lough Erne, which you are subtly reminded of by the numerous moorings and boats dotted around the island. This gives Enniskillen a uniquely continental ambiance unparalleled to anywhere on Ireland’s inland waterways.

Enniskillen is not just an idyllic tourist attraction. Through it’s many years of welcoming visitors, it has developed into a hub of entertainment, shopping and dining out! Water-sports, coarse and game fishing, championship golf courses and sightseeing are all popular activities in the local area.

The layout of the town lends itself to being a shopper’s paradise. Enniskillen’s long, meandering main street stretches virtually the length of the island. This allows for a thoroughly relaxing day out and provides you with a natural sense of bustle, vibrancy and character.
