The Wooden Spoon Charity, the Children’s Charity of Rugby, are pleased to announce a major lunchtime event on 2 June at the Culloden Hotel. They will be celebrating the forthcoming 70th Birthday of one of their two Ulster Presidents, Willie John McBride.

Yes, Willie will be 70 and to help everybody celebrate he has invited some Special Guests from his playing days. From Lions Tours of the late sixties and early 70s come Englishmen David Duckham, Mike Burton and Bob Hiller and Scotman Ian “Mighty Mouse” McLauchlan. Welsh Legend Phil Bennett will be attending as well as Irish Lions Fergus Slattery and Ray McLoughlin. Ray, incidentally, started and finished his Irish Rugby career on exactly the same days as Willie.

This event is being Sponsored by Belfast Accountancy firm BDO.

Wooden Spoon raise money for capital projects involving disadvantaged or disabled children and younger people. Ulster Chairman Peter Wood has recently announced that the Lunch sold out within a month of being published. A waiting list is being set up and interested persons can email Peter here.

Peter is hoping that one or two surprise guests will turn up on the day. Whatever happens, it will be a day to remember as we celebrate the achievements one of Ulster’s greatest sporting Ambassadors!
