Quins RFC members raised £5000 for Irish Legend to buy scrummage machine for rugby club North of Capetown.

Roger Young, one of Irelands greatest scrum halves, has retired from his Dental practice in Capetown. He and and his wife Jennifer have set up a beautiful new guest house in Langebaan, which is on the Atlantic Coast of the Western Cape area about 150 kilometres north of Capetown.

Roger is now coaching his local rugby team in Langebaan – 95% of his players are coloured and come from poor families. Those in work are mainly manual labourers, but they were very enthusiastic and anxious to learn. Roger came home for two weeks in March to attend the Ireland v England match at Landsdowne Road. He asked if Belfast Harlequins RFC could raise some money for his club as they badly needed a scrummaging machine which they could not afford.
With that in mind, Quins Luncheon Club members rallied and held a fund raising lunch at Deramore on Tuesday 22nd March. At the lunch Roger spoke of his experiences during his International career and his two tours with the British & Irish Lions. There was a excellent turnout and £5000 was raised.

A big thank you to our President Wes Kettyle, Brian Stafford and everyone who attended and helped make the event a great success.
