Malone RFC Under 13’s just no match for the Virginia Boys
Virginia under 13 rugby team had an early start on Saturday for an away match to Malone R.F.C. in Belfast. After the long journey and a good worm-up Virginia started the match with a lot of passion and energy. Malone fought hard to defend the line and made some try saving tackles near their line but Virginia never relented. Eventually Virginia no. 8 Oisin Kiernan made the breakthrough scoring a well worked try on the right wing. Peter Smith at outhalf had a narrow miss for the conversion. From the Drop out kick Virginia fullback Gareth Mannion caught the ball and made a break for the Malone half. After being tackled Gareth released flanker Ben Brunton who broke through several tackles to score near the goalposts. Peter Smith scored from the conversion to make it 12-0 to Virginia. Again Malone were under pressure from the kick off with another try being scored by second row Luke Sheriff who crossed over after being set up by Prop Conor Cahill who made some excellent runs all through the match. At this stage, Malones heads were starting to drop and any attacks they had were defended very well by Virginia with some touch tackling by centres Charlie Reilly, Martin O’Connell wingers Fionn O’Reilly and Mantas Ivaskevicius. The next try scored by Virginia was built again from resolute Defense, when Malone centre tried to make a break Charlie Reilly made a textbook tackle, got back to his feet ,stole the ball and using his pace and power scored to the right of the posts, with Peter Smith again scoring the conversion. The last few minutes of the first half finished with Virginia running in another two tries, both scored by Charley Reilly to give him his hatrick with Peter Smith converting both to make the score 38-0 to Virginia.
The second half started with Virginia bringing on some substitutes. These lads were not here to make up numbers and showed in their second half performance that the Virginia coaches will have difficult decisions to make in the next few weeks. Virginia scored another two tries, one by fullback Gareth Mannion and one by winger Mantas Ivaskevicius, with Peter Smith converting one. Malone upped their game and tried hard to break Virginias line and only resolute tackling kept Malone at bay. The match finished 50-0 to Virginia but Malone were very unlucky not to score at least one try. The Virginia players can be proud of this performance and hopefully can build on this for the future.
