Strong activations planned in run-up to RWC 2015
The International Rugby Board and the United Nations World Food Programme have announced an extension to the successful Tackle Hunger partnership to deliver an unprecedented platform of activation and awareness to help tackle hunger worldwide in the run up to and throughout Rugby World Cup 2015 in England.
The new agreement, a decade on from when the Tackle Hunger programme first kicked off at Rugby World Cup 2003, will see an extended commitment to raise awareness and funds from promotions in the stadium to the armchair across all IRB events, including Women’s Rugby World Cup 2014, Rugby World Cup 2015 and other key properties.
Speaking at the signing of the agreement at the inaugural IRB World Rugby Conference and Exhibition on Tuesday, IRB Chairman Bernard Lapasset said: “The IRB is delighted and honoured to continue the strong Tackle Hunger partnership with WFP, the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide.”
“Over the last decade, we have focused on delivering the triple objectives of raising awareness of the World Food Programme’s important work, drawing attention to the plight of the world’s hungry and connecting the global Rugby community with the programme, both on and off the field.”
“We can now look forward to an extensive and cohesive programme of activation across IRB events and digital and social media platforms, especially our showcase Rugby World Cup, to spread the word and engage our community.”
Jay Aldous, Director of WFP’s Private Sector Partnerships Division, said: “Through partnerships such as Tackle Hunger, we are able to connect with existing and new supporters of WFP’s work across the world. In times of emergencies, be they through natural disasters or conflict, we can rely on our partners to help get the message out while we work to get food assistance where it’s needed the most.”
Greg Barrow, Director of WFP’s London Office, speaking from the WFP exhibition stand at #IRBConfEx, added: “The level of interest and engagement from the global Rugby family is evident here judging from the conversations we’ve had with delegates and IRB Member Unions who understand WFP’s critical role delivering food assistance. Our work with the IRB is helping to highlight the role that good nutrition plays in building the brains and bodies of the next generation.”
IRB Chief Executive Brett Gosper said: “Solidarity is one of Rugby’s core character-building values and through the partnership we hope to reach out to the global Rugby family and share with them the great work WFP are undertaking to Tackle Hunger. We look forward to the next phase of activations as part of this important partnership as we build towards Rugby World Cup 2015.”
