Strabane 2nd XV 20 – 3 City Of Derry 4th XV
The game began with City Of Derry 4th XV sportingly clapping the Strabane 2nd XV team onto the pitch as league champions and that was the end of the niceties. This old rivalry between strabane and Derry always provides a close and well fought game and this was to be no different.
The home team playing against the wind still managed to provide an exceptional tactical kicking game. From one of these kicks the pack caught and rumbled from 5 meters out and scored the first try from jonny kee. The pack then rumbled back to the try line again and Christopher Hamilton sniped round the side of a ruck and scored strabane a second which Simon maxwell converted. The third was a repeat of the first try which Jason Mitchell scored from. The visitors replied with a penalty to make it 17 to 3 at half time.
The weather and quality of game both deteriorated for the second half and the home team were happy to just play territory in the visitors half. The only scoring was a penalty from Simon maxwell. The final score of 20 to 3 ensured strabane seconds the prestige of having a 100% record in the minor north league, 18 played 18 wins.
With the league season now wrapped up attention goes to the McCambey cup final and the Ravenhill cup semi final.
This has been an excellent season for strabane seconds and they and their skipper, Nigel Finlay, deserve huge credit for their efforts
