7th December 2022: With Christmas fast approaching, Modern Milkman, the 21st century’s answer to the traditional milkround, has given the nation’s children the opportunity to voice what is most important to them this festive season.
Surveying 7 – 12-year-olds, recent research has revealed that a staggering two thirds (67%) of Gen Alpha’s would be willing to forego a shiny new plastic toy under the Christmas tree this year, if it meant they could help save our planet – with ridding our oceans of plastic as their number one Christmas wish (38%).
In the midst of the cost-of-living crisis, the Modern Milkman has discovered that eight in ten children (83%) think their parents spend up to a whopping £10,000 each year during the Christmas period. Whilst parents do try to make every Christmas as special as the last, unsurprisingly the annual festive splurge comes hand in hand with leftover waste, with wrapping paper (70%), plastic packaging (42%) and uneaten food (34%) as the items 7 – 12-year-olds think will fill the rubbish bin at the end of Christmas day!
In an effort to find out what Gen Alpha’s think of their family’s festive spending and give voice to the differences they’d like to make moving forwards into the new year, Modern Milkman has commissioned research to explore the sustainable sacrifices 7 – 12 year olds are willing to make in the name of planetary protection.
Simon Mellin, CEO and Founder at Modern Milkman, says: “Just like us grown-up’s, it’s apparent that children also want to do their part to help save the planet, so it’s important that we empower them to feel like they can make small changes that add up to be part of the solution The research has found that young people are aware of just how much food and plastic packaging goes to waste at this time of year, so it’s time that we, as adults, make a conscious effort to reduce waste and our carbon footprint during this time.”
As we all try to make our money go further this year, parents will be pleased to hear that rather than splashing out on the latest PlayStation or fancy new bike, their little ones would much rather their hard-earned money was spent helping to provide items for families less fortunate than themselves (32%).
What’s more, the gift of spending time volunteering as a family to help make a positive change in their local community, is also at the top of children’s Christmas wish lists this year. Kids today would be willing to swap a present from Santa’s sack if it meant they could help feed the homeless (31%), support food banks (29%) and rid the nation’s beaches of litter (21%).
There is still time to be put on Santa’s naughty list, so the Modern Milkman has unearthed what children think they can do to make sure they remain firmly on the nice list this Christmas – and being environmentally aware takes three of the top five spots!

… It’s Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, according to sales data from one of the UK’s biggest online perfume retailers. For the first time in three years, Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely has pipped Britney’s Fantasy to the top spot to claim the 2022 celebrity fragrance crown, whilst the third most popular celebrity perfume was Ariana Grande’s debut scent, Ari.
The ‘top three’ outsold fragrances by Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Taylor, Cheryl Cole, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj and Paris Hilton.
The data by Perfumedirect.com, which sells £8m worth of the most popular perfumes and aftershaves every year, reveals its top five bestselling celebrity fragrances for 2022 are:

Best known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex in the City, American actress Sarah Jessica Parker’s first fragrance Lovely launched in 2005, and she now has 20 fragrances in her collection!

The ‘shower scene’ in classic thriller Psycho has been voted the most memorable bathroom scene in film or television history, according to new national research.
The survey, carried out by luxury bathing and skincare brand fenjal, asked participants to name the most iconic bathroom scenes from the big and small screens.
Marion Cane’s murder scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s seminal thriller took top spot with 16% of the vote, closely followed by Allie Hamilton’s bath scene in romantic drama The Notebook (13%).
Julia Roberts’ bubble bath in Pretty Woman, Elizabeth Taylor’s lotus flower bath in Cleopatra, and Marilyn Monroe’s ice bath in The Seven Year Itch all took an 11% share of the public vote.
Elsewhere, Tony Montana’s lavish bubble bath in Scarface took 4% of the vote, while the prefects’ bathroom scene from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire was selected 3% of people.
fenjal also quizzed the nation on what makes the perfect bath, as part of the brand’s 60th anniversary celebrations.
Nearly half of people (49%) believe temperature is the most important element when it comes to running the perfect bath, with a third (33%) saying bubbles are the key to ultimate relaxation.
Elsewhere, the study found Brits prefer baths to showers. Over half of respondents (52%) opt for the tub, compared to around three in ten (31%) preferring a shower, while 16% do not have a preference.

A new study has revealed that Florida is the best state to go running in.
Research conducted by exercise and nutrition experts Fitness Volt analyzed multiple factors including:
• The natural beauty of each state
• Safety of each state
• Mean elevation
• The number of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) marathons and also regular running races that take place over a year
• Air quality and the average temperature in each state in comparison to the optimal running temperature which studies show is 51.5 °F.
Each state was given a score out of 10 for each factor, which was then totalled to give a score on the running index. The higher the score the better the state is to go running in.
1 – Florida
The sunshine state ranks as the best place to go running in America. Florida boasts some beautiful beaches and is one of the flattest states meaning the running routes are perfect for all types of runners. There are 6 IAAF marathons held in Florida, however the state also has over 1000 other races, varying in distance, for runners of all abilities making Florida one of the most inclusive running states. Although with an average temperature of 72.4°F you can expect it to be one of the hottest states to run.
2 – Ohio
Ohio, although ranking lower on natural beauty, ranks higher on safety, the two key indicators for this study being personal and road safety. Ohio has a lower mean elevation than many states at 850 ft which would surely benefit the runners of the 9 IAAF marathons as well as the 520 standard running races that take place in Ohio. Ohio also has an average temperature of 52.1°F which is one of the closest temperatures to the optimal running temperature (51.5°F), making Ohio a great place to go running.
3 – California
California ranks as one of the most naturally beautiful states in America which makes it the ideal place to get out and explore on your runs, however, the incredible landscape is partly due to California having a mean elevation of 2,900 ft. Although this doesn’t stop the runners of California from taking part in the 160 standard races and 9 IAAF marathons that take place in the state. The diverse races and stunning scenery are definite reasons why California is the third best state to go running in.
4 – New York
Although New York ranks lower for natural beauty, is a much safer state than the top 3. Much like California, NY holds 9 IAAF marathons but doesn’t neglect the runners who may not fancy the full 42km run, with over 350 races for runners of all abilities. With only 1000 ft mean elevation New York isn’t going to be to challenging to run in and therefor the state makes the top 5 best states to go running in.
5 – Washington
Washington has been crowned the most naturally beautiful state in America, it’s also the safest state in the top 5 of this list. Washington only hosts 2 IAAF marathons, but makes up for this with over 430 other races for runners to take part in. Washington does have higher mean elevation (1700 ft) which is the price of having such beautiful landscapes which could make some runs slightly harder than others.
6 – Minnesota
Minnesota Is lower on the natural beauty index, however, is one of the safest states in America. There are 7 IAAF marathons held in Minnesota which is one of the most in America. The state has a slightly lower number of standard races with 290, but still offers a good range of distances and difficulty for runners of different abilities. Minnesota is one of the colder states as well with average temperatures of 40°F despite this, it remains the sixth best state to go running in.
7- Massachusetts
Massachusetts is the second safest state in this list. With only a 500 ft mean elevation it means that most runners won’t have to battle too many hills. There are 3 IAAF marathons held in Massachusetts along with over 500 other races for runners to take part in. The average temperature is 50°F which is only 1.5°F under the optimal running temperature, making it a great state to get those personal best running times.
8 – Rhode Island
Rhode Island is one of the least naturally beautiful states on this list however is also one of the safest in America. There is a mean elevation of only 200 ft so it’s nice and flat, this combined with the average temperature of 51.9°F which is only 0.4°F over the optimal running temperature. There is 1 IAAF marathon in the state with only 34 other races. Rhode Island has great running conditions but doesn’t quite offer the opportunities to utilise them, which makes this the eighth best state to go running in.
9 – Hawaii
Hawaii has the best air quality in America and is a state full to the brim of natural beauty. Although the state has over 3000 ft of elevation and has the hottest average temperatures meaning running could be challenging. Hawaii holds 2 IAAF marathons and 38 other races for runners to enjoy and experience the beauty Hawaii offers.
10 – Oregon
Oregon has a slightly lower safety index score, however, has a higher natural beauty score. Oregon has the highest mean elevation in this list with 3300 ft. Which could make the 2 marathons and 266 other races quite challenging, but worth the effort to experience the luscious landscapes of Oregon.
A spokesperson for Fitness Volt commented: “America has some of the most beautiful natural scenery in the world, and there’s no better way to experience and discover some of this than running. Outdoor exercises are great ways to get fit especially for those who may not like the gym or a gym is not as accessible, but everyone has access to great running routes.
50 Million Americans are estimated to have participated in outdoor running and jogging this year, and no matter what state those people are in this research shows that every single state has opportunities for all runners of all abilities to get outdoors and get involved.”

Anchovy and Tomato Toast with Pickled Shallot
Ingredients:
• 2 slices of crusty white sourdough
• 4 on-the-vine plum tomatoes
• 1 banana shallot
• 4 top quality anchovy fillets
• Olive oil
• Salt
• Black pepper
Instructions:
1. Using the coarse side of a box grater, grate the tomatoes.
2. Season the grated tomatoes with a pinch of salt and a splash of olive oil.
3. Transfer the seasoned tomatoes to a sieve set over a bowl and leave them to drain off any excess tomato juice.
4. Meanwhile, warm a large frying pan on a medium heat.
5. Generously coat both sides of the sliced sourdough in olive oil.
6. Cook both sides of the sourdough in the pan until crisp and golden brown.
7. Transfer the pan-toasted sourdough to a kitchen towel to absorb any excess oil.
8. Peel the shallot and slice it as finely as you can, before separating into rings.
9. By now, the tomato should have released its excess liquid, leaving you with a lovely pulpy texture. Double check that you’re happy with the seasoning. Be sure to reserve the leftover tomato juice – it makes for a great salad dressing!
10. Cut the toasted sourdough into fingers and top with a spoonful of the tomato pulp, followed by an anchovy and 4 slices of shallot. Finish with a drizzle of olive oil and a crack of black pepper.

Photographer and hiker Damon Alexander-Cole is leading a group of 430+ hikers across six different locations in the Peak District on Christmas Day to support those who may be lonely, suffering or just want to get out and explore during one of the toughest days of the year.
Christmas 2022 will be Damon’s third Christmas Day hike, in addition to his monthly walks that he runs throughout the year, which receive between 70 and 100 attendees.
The hike taking place on the 25th of December 2022 is in support of the mental health charity, Mind. Leading outdoor retailer, GO Outdoors, will be providing the hikers with its limited-edition range of hats to keep warm. The hats were made in partnership with Mind for the #HatsOnForMind campaign which encourages the British public to step outdoors to better their mental health during the winter months.
Prior to the national lockdown in March 2020, Damon experienced a series of unfortunate events including losing his home, a relationship, his job, and loved ones becoming ill, which created a detrimental impact on his mental health.
To help improve this, the [now] 36-year-old took up hiking in the Peak District in the daytime while he was living in his car and using local restaurant wi-fi to apply for work-from-home jobs in the evenings.
After filming his hikes, Damon found a passion for photography and videography and is now an established photographer with his own enterprise and is no longer homeless.
A recent survey conducted by outdoor retailer GO Outdoors in collaboration with Mind, discovered 61% of Brits claim that spending time outside is where they feel their most content and unburdened1.
Damon Alexander-Cole said: “Speaking from personal experience, the benefits of being outside and active in the fresh air has priceless benefits to your mental health.

1. This is not a hotel. 4. No Snooping. As a generation raised on ‘Come Dine with Me’ it’s no surprise we like to snoop when visiting a friend’s home, and according to a recent survey, Londoners are the most likely to, with almost half confessing to a secret snoop around, compared to the national average of 34%. But try to avoid a riffle through the draws because if the host finds even a pair of socks out of place, their paranoia could last until Easter – and we all know if the host thinks you snoop, it may lead to being left off the guest list in future.

Gareth Betts, who also has 21 years’ experience when it comes to interior design and renovation, has shared his expert glossary of terms to ensure a seamless staircase renovation:
1. A newel post is a structural element that extends below the floor and subfloor and is bolted to the floor joist.
2. The string is the structural member that supports the treads and risers in standard staircases.
3. The baserail sits on your string and has a groove which accepts the spindles. Should you want a cut string staircase, there would be no need for a baserail as the spindles enter the treads.
4. The balustrade is the railing and baluster that prevents you from falling over the edge. It’s also the collective name for the complete assembly of handrails, including spindles and newel posts. These can be highly decorative; turned, carved, forged, or even replaced by wooden or glass panels. They sit between the handrail and stairs and are also known as balusters.
5. The risers are the vertical portion between each tread on the stair. In open plan properties, this section can be missing.
