THOUSANDS OF BRITS SET TO GO THE EXTRA MILE FOR DODDIE WEIR

A pair of former Scotland rugby captains joined MND campaigner Davy Zyw and My Name’5 Doddie Foundation CEO Jill Douglas to encourage people to sign up for this year’s Doddie Aid.

Andy Nicol and John Barclay are just two of the thousands of people across the UK and beyond who have signed-up to raise funds for research to find meaningful treatments for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) by getting the miles in, whether it’s walking, cycling, running, rowing, or anything else, in the New Year.

Davy Zyw, who has been living with MND for four years and this year completed a 260-mile continuous cycle along some of Scotland’s highest roads is also set to take part in Doddie Aid, a virtual mass-participation exercise event founded by former Scotland captain Rob Wainwright which lasts for six weeks from New Year’s Day.

My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was launched by legendary Scotland international and MND campaigner Doddie Weir, who died aged 52 last month following his diagnosis in 2016.

The charity’s biggest annual fundraising event, Doddie Aid, has helped to raise more than £2 million for MND research with more than 35,000 participants covering four million miles since its launch in 2020.

Speaking at a memorial service held in Doddie’s memory at Melrose Parish Church earlier this week (Monday 19 December), founder Rob Wainwright urged people to sign up to help “keep Doddie’s fundraising legacy alive”.

He said: “Actively nag your friends, your colleagues, your club, your school, your business and your family to get involved.

“If 50,000 people sign up, that’s £1 million for research. That is how we fulfil Doddie’s legacy, and that must be Doddie’s trophy”.

Jill Douglas, CEO of the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, said: “We are overwhelmed by the huge number of people who have already signed up for this year’s Doddie Aid.

“It’s a real testament to Doddie’s legacy that he has inspired so many people to make a difference and help others living with MND and to one day find a cure for this disease.

“Doddie Aid has become a regular and hugely popular way to kick off 2023! With over 9000 people already signed up, I think this will be the biggest Doddie Aid yet.” ”

Former teammate Scott Hastings added: “We have the brightest scientific minds who will find a cure for this disease, but the research needs resources and it needs funds – your funds.

“We will raise as much as we can until we can find a cure for MND.”

The event splits participants into six districts, with the winning district being the one which covers the furthest distance over the duration of the event. To take part and claim your free district snood, download the Doddie Aid app from your app store, or click this link: https://onelink.to/536j6n.

Fitness experts share their go-to HIGH-PROTEIN breakfasts
If you’re not starting your day with a high-protein breakfast, you’re missing a trick that can deliver so many benefits!
Performance Nutrition Coach, Ben Poole comments:
“Any meal and overall diet that is at least adequate in protein is one that is going to prove so beneficial to an individual’s overall health and well-being for a huge array of different reasons, again no matter your goal.”
Some of the benefits of a high-protein breakfast include:
• More effective and efficient recovery/repair of muscles from exercise
• Helps keep you more satiated (full/satisfied) for longer
• Helps reduce/minimise muscle loss and increase/promote lean muscle gain
• Helps cells repair, and protects the body from infections and viruses
Ed Tooley, Performance Nutritionist at The Rugby Football League, agrees. When it comes to supporting our muscle mass, Ed says “We don’t store protein in the body like we do carbohydrates and fat, so it’s hugely beneficial to include adequate protein at breakfast after not ingesting any during the night. Protein is also our satiety nutrient. It keeps us feeling fuller for longer, and is likely to minimise wanting to snack again too soon.”
Okay, now you understand the benefits of a high-protein breakfast, but how can you get it into your body? Take a look below, as four fitness experts share some of their go-to, tasty, high-protein breakfast options!
• Protein-rich omelette or frittata – by fitness coach Jack Forrester, @jack_coachedbyjack
“My favourite breakfast, if I’m looking for something savoury, is a high-protein frittata or omelette. Depending on your overall calorie requirements, you can manipulate things quite easily with an omelette in order to still get a good amount of protein but without the added calories from the fat of the egg yolk. My go-to recipe is:
• 2-3 whole eggs
• 100ml egg whites
• chopped onions/garlic/tomatoes
• 75-100g Beef / Turkey or Heck Chicken mince
This recipe can be eaten hot after making, or batch cooked on a larger scale and kept in the fridge and even put into a wrap for easier eating on the go!”
As another big fan of eggs in the morning, performance nutrition coach Ben Poole adds “For someone who needs more calories, you might look at having 3-4 whole eggs, but for someone smaller, or who doesn’t need as many calories, you can simply swap this for 1-2 whole eggs, and 2-3 egg whites! But importantly not missing out on the goodness of the egg yolk!”
• Protein Porridge by CrossFit coach Josie Baxter, @josiebaxterpt
“If I have the morning off and a little more time on my hands I’ll make protein porridge, by blending rolled oats with Optimum Nutrition’s Vanilla Whey Protein, mixing it with water and then heating it through until it’s nice and thick. I usually add cinnamon and then a mixture of different fresh fruits.”
• Protein Cereal by Performance Nutrition Coach Ben Poole, @benjohnfit
“As much as I love a fully cooked breakfast, sometimes time is precious and we forget to prep and need to turn to something that will tick all of the necessary boxes in the click of your fingers. For days like this, I love ELEAT, a high-protein breakfast cereal that’s just come onto the market. In contrast to more traditional high-sugar, low-protein cereals, ELEAT will provide you with a great dose of that all-important protein and leave you feeling ready to attack the day ahead!”

ELEAT (RRP £7 x250g/ £2.20 x50g) cereals are available at eleatcereal.com and Planet Organic in four delicious flavours – Chocolate Triumph, Cinnamon Sensation, Vanilla Thriller and Strawberry Blitz. Eat them with your favourite choice of milk/m*lk, or even straight out of the pack as a quick nutritious snack.

Expert reveals 10 best full body exercises for a busy schedule

There’s no denying that the lead up to Christmas and the New Year is a very busy time and leaves little for exercising, but that’s where fitness expert Fitness Volt comes in.

In a bid to help you stay fit from the comfort of your home in whatever time you have, below are 10 exercises you can tailor to work for you.

Glutes
1. B-Stance Hip Thrusts can be done with or without weights, and requires nothing but a sturdy raised surface. A lower-back friendly exercise, B-Stance hip thrusts are suitable for all levels of exercise.

Simply sit on the floor with your back against a sturdy bench/chair while keeping one leg bent and the foot flat on the floor, while the other remains straight resting the heel on the floor.

Drive the flat foot into the ground focusing on the heel to push the body up and parallel with the floor, then lower bottom to the floor slowly and repeat for desired number of reps. A typical number, for any exercise, is three sets of 12, but this can be adjusted to a person’s ability or time schedule.

2. Single-leg Romanian Deadlifts work mainly the glutes and hamstrings, but also work on the hip abductors and adductors. An exercise that is easy on the lower back and knee, this exercise also improves strength, balance, and mobility, and can be done with or without weights.

Standing with feet together, hinge forward at the hips and raise one leg behind you until your body is parallel with the floor, before lowering the leg back and raising your torso back up taking care not to round the back.

Repeat for as many reps as desired, then do the same for the other side.

Shoulder and Biceps
3. Using bodyweight, pike push-ups are a great exercise to strengthen and build the shoulder muscle, the deltoid.

Standing in down dog but with tip toes, bend your arms at the elbow while keeping the back straight. Ensure you bend your arms outwards rather than keeping the elbows tucked to your sides.

4. Dumbbell lateral raises are often done using weights, but the can be swapped out for alternatives like water bottles for example. Because of the nature of the exercise heavy weights aren’t required; the number of reps will make the main difference.

Holding your weight or alternative in each hand, extend arms out to your sides. Bracing abs and holding shoulders back, bend your arms at the elbow slightly before hinging them down at the shoulders about halfway.

Lift them back up to parallel and then lower all the way down to sides. And repeat.

Abdominals and sides
5. Windshield Wipers are tough and targets the obliques; the side muscles. The exercise changes in difficulty depending on the position of the legs so can be altered according to level.

Lay on your back with arms outstretched but with legs straight and facing up. Lower legs over to one side keeping them together and lowering them as close to the floor as possible without lifting your shoulders or back off the floor. Return legs to centre and do the same on the other side.

Do as many of these as you can.

6. Reverse crunches work the lower section of your abdomen. No weights are required for this exercise making it a great at-home ab exercise.

This exercise involves laying on your back with legs bent and arms flat on the floor, lifting the hips towards the sternum using abs with little to no assistance from the arms on either side.

Legs
7. Squat jumps work every muscle in the legs. It’s also a fat-burning and cardio exercise. It can be done with or without weights, but due to its explosive nature, it’s encouraged that supportive, cushioned shoes are worn to protect the feet, ankles and knees on impact.

Begin in a wide squat position then jump as high as possible with straight legs, keeping the quads and glutes contracted, and using arms for momentum. Land lightly on slightly bent knees to absorb the shock.

Do as many as possible, imagining the floor is hot to make the most of the exercise.

8. An effective bodyweight-only exercise, walking lunges work the quads, hamstrings, and glutes. High reps can outweigh the lack of weight. Standing with feet together, keep hands on hips while and take a large step forward.

Step forward and do the same with the other leg and repeat until the intended number has been reached.

Back
9. Skydivers require no equipment at all apart from a mat. Using bodyweight, this exercise is great for posture and to counteract the effects of long periods of sitting. This exercise is most effective when the position is held for a few seconds, slowly released before going back into it again.

Simply lay on your front with legs straight and palms on the floor either side of your head. Lift your legs, head, chest, and arms off the floor while sliding shoulders back and down.

Hold the position for a few seconds before lowering down slowly, and then repeat.

10. No space for a rowing machine at home can be countered by doing seated resistance band rows instead. A resistance band can be used to replicate most bodyweight and machine exercises.

Using a resistance band looped around the feet is a great alternative to cable seated rows, and also much better for storage. Sit down and pull the band back keeping shoulders away from ears and arms tucked by your sides.

Keep abs contracted, and repeat reps as required.

Commenting on the findings, a Fitness Volt spokesperson said: “The great thing about these exercises is that you can stay on top of your health and fitness with little to no cost, and from any place at any time.

“The exercises work together to ensure a full body workout, but each can be done in isolation and amended according to the person doing them – they’re effective whether you’re a seasoned exerciser, or just starting out on a fitness journey.”

Santa Claus Worldwide Brings Histories of Holiday Gift-Givers to Life

Asheville, NC, Dec. 20, 2022 — “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” and a St. Nick and a Belsnickle and a Kris Kringle and other midwinter gift-givers from around the globe, and researcher and author Tom Jerman brings them all to life in his award-winning book, Santa Claus Worldwide: A History of St. Nicholas and Other Holiday Gift-Bringers.

Jerman’s book explores the origins and traditions related to a diverse spectrum of holiday characters and sets the record straight on what he calls “the most important event in the history of Santa Claus:” the publication in 1821 of William B. Gilley’s eight-page booklet, The Children’s Friend: A New-Year’s Present to the Little Ones from Five to Twelve.

Readers have called Santa Claus Worldwide, “Entertaining, persuasive, and in places hilarious!” … “a well-researched and enjoyable book” … “for anyone interested in the history of Santa Claus as a constantly changing, adapting, and evolving cultural figure” … and “a true delight for those wanting to know the historical facts and history of one of the world’s most celebrated givers.”

Jerman began collecting Santa Claus figurines in the 1980s as a hobby, and the sheer variety of Santa Claus incarnations he encountered fueled his curiosity.

“Santa is whoever you think he is,” Jerman said in an interview. “You can envision him any way you want to envision him; there are no constrictions on who can be Santa Claus.”

The product of years of exhaustive historical research, Santa Claus Worldwide is the first legitimate history of Santa Claus in more than a decade, and the first history in more than 100 years to provide a comprehensive look at the Yuletide gift-givers throughout the world.

Some of Jerman’s fascinating insights include:

– “Santa Claus” is not merely the American name for St. Nicholas.
– Jerman also corrects a significant inaccuracy perpetrated in 1953 by an eminent Berkeley historian, Charles W. Jones, that American author Washington Irving created, in effect, the American Santa Claus.
– The original American Santa was one of the shabby, unkempt, secular gift-givers known by two dozen different names in Germany who immigrated to America with German children during the early nineteenth century. One of them, Pelznickel (“Nicholas in furs”), became known as Belsnickle in Pennsylvania while another, Christkindl (“Christ child”), became known as Kriss Kringle (more commonly written as “Kris” today).
– The name “Santeclaus,” the bearded German gift-giver who descended down the chimney and left gifts in stockings on Christmas and a sleigh pulled by a flying reindeer were united in 1821 by publisher William B. Gilley in a book called The Children’s Friend, which disappeared from history until it was rediscovered in 1953.
-And so much more.

Ultimately, Santa Claus Worldwide proves, conclusively, the existence of Santa and his impact on our world.

“Santa indisputably exists as the symbol of Christmas, and Christmas represents our most noble virtues,” Jerman says. “Symbols are real, and they can be very powerful.”

About the Author
Tom A. Jerman, a resident of Asheville, N.C., has bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and journalism and a juris doctorate degree from the University of Utah. Employed as a copy editor with The Salt Lake Tribune between 1974-78, he went on to practice labor and employment law for 35 years. In 2015, he took early retirement to pursue his desire to write something more interesting and enduring than legal treatises.

A serious collector, Jerman has amassed some 4,500 Santa figurines and ornaments, and thousands of antique postcards printed between 1900 and 1910. The enormous diversity of figures — temporal, geographic, historical, size, attire, date of gift-giving, mode of travel — prompted him to write Santa Claus Worldwide, the first volume of a planned trilogy that will include a volume on the authorship of “The Night Before Christmas” and a volume on collecting Santa Claus figurines. If all goes according to plan, the second volume will be published in winter 2023, the bicentennial of “The Night Before Christmas.” The third volume, currently under construction, will be a guide for individuals who collect Santa Claus figurines and ornaments.

BRITAIN’S EXCITED YOUNGSTERS GO TO BED AT 8.24PM ON CHRISTMAS EVE

• Children in the East of England go to bed the earliest on December 24th
• Kids in the South-West are the latest to bed on Xmas Eve
• Silentnight has developed a sleep guide for parents to help children overcome poor quality sleep this Christmas

While the excitement for Santa’s arrival will be at a maximum on Christmas Eve, the nation’s children will go to bed at 8.24pm on average, new research has revealed.

A study from the UK’s most trusted sleep brand, Silentnight, found that while 10% of kids will not go to bed until 10pm or later on Christmas Eve, the majority of the nation’s children will have their heads on their pillows much earlier than that.

The earliest to bed will be children in the East of England. Youngsters in big cities like Norwich, Peterborough and Ipswich, or towns like Luton, will go to bed at an average time of 7.50pm in preparation for the Christmas Day festivities.

Conversely, children in the South-West of England – towns and cities like Plymouth, Exeter, Bath, Bristol and Gloucester – won’t finally turn off the bedroom lights on Christmas Eve until 9.25pm on average.

The research also shows that 58% of UK children could wake up more than twice during the night on Christmas Eve, due to the excitement of the big day ahead.

To help make bedtime routines as easy as possible this Christmas, Silentnight has prepared a sleep guide for parents to help children relax and rest so they have enough energy to get through a busy Christmas Day.

Hannah Shore, Sleep Expert at Silentnight, said: “While Christmas is a magical time of year for many, and children’s excitement on Christmas Eve is often palpable, it is important that parents help their young ones get enough sleep so that they can fully enjoy Christmas Day.

“Children need an average of 10 hours sleep per night, depending on their age. Our survey reveals that many children may not get anywhere near this on Christmas Eve due to the excitement and anticipation of Christmas Day.

“It’s interesting to see some of the regional differences in bedtimes on Christmas Eve. Parents of children in the South-west might want to try and get their youngsters to bed a little earlier if possible so that when they get up bright and early on Christmas Day, so they are not over-tired.”

HANNAH SHORE’S TOP SLEEP TIPS…

1. Create the perfect festive sleeping environment
Creating a comfortable sleeping environment for your child will help them drift off to sleep more easily. Comfort for a child is ensuring they feel safe and secure within their environment so they can fall asleep, whether that’s a comforter, a special teddy or even a night light – all these familiar things will help them fall asleep much easier on Christmas Eve.

2. Watch the sugar before bed
We all know that Christmas is a time of indulgence but festive treats like selection boxes and enjoying a candy cane or two contain a lot of sugar which can have a negative impact on sleep. Set a cut off time for sugary snacks and drinks, ideally four hours before bed and make sure they don’t have any sweet treats after this.

3. Get out on a festive morning walk
Being in the great outdoors, especially first thing in the morning, can give you access to more natural sources of light, which is much brighter than more artificial sources of light found in the home. Gaining access to natural light on a regular basis can help regulate the sleep wake pattern and can assist children with feeling more refreshed when they wake up, along with helping them to fall asleep more easily. So, why not try and get outside this Christmas Eve for a festive Christmas morning walk with the family. It may also help with tiring the kids out!

4. Routine, routine, routine
This is so important to establishing a good night’s sleep and while its harder during the festive period, try and stick to your normal sleep routines as much as possible. This will help children to get to sleep easier while there’s additional excitement in the air and will help to ensure they get the hours they need.

5. Opt for calming night-time activities
When children are excited, they produce wake promoting hormones which can make them struggle to fall asleep, with bedtime often when excitement from the day and for the day to come can come to the surface. So, to ensure a calming environment and to help them unwind, try and distract excited children with a bedtime story, or an audio book. Most importantly, try and complete any Christmas traditions before the wind down routine begins. Activities such as leaving the carrot for Rudolf and mince pie for Santa can be hugely exciting for children, so it’s key to do this earlier to ensure it doesn’t impact their ability to sleep later on.

CHRISTMAS DAY HIKE

HIKER ORGANISES MASS CHRISTMAS DAY RAMBLE TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND REDUCE LONELINESS DURING THE HOLIDAYS
• Hiker Damon Alexander-Cole is leading a group of 300+ hikers across the Peak District on Christmas Day to support the mental health charity, Mind
• The hikers will be wearing leading outdoor retailer GO Outdoors’ limited-edition range of hats, made in collaboration with Mind

Photographer and hiker Damon Alexander-Cole is leading a group of 430+ hikers across six different locations in the Peak District on Christmas Day to support those who may be lonely, suffering or just want to get out and explore during one of the toughest days of the year.

Christmas 2022 will be Damon’s third Christmas Day hike, in addition to his monthly walks that he runs throughout the year, which receive between 70 and 100 attendees.

The hike taking place on the 25th of December 2022 is in support of the mental health charity, Mind. Leading outdoor retailer, GO Outdoors, will be providing the hikers with its limited-edition range of hats to keep warm. The hats were made in partnership with Mind for the #HatsOnForMind campaign which encourages the British public to step outdoors to better their mental health during the winter months.

Prior to the national lockdown in March 2020, Damon experienced a series of unfortunate events including losing his home, a relationship, his job, and loved ones becoming ill, which created a detrimental impact on his mental health.

To help improve this, the [now] 36-year-old took up hiking in the Peak District in the daytime while he was living in his car and using local restaurant wi-fi to apply for work-from-home jobs in the evenings.

After filming his hikes, Damon found a passion for photography and videography and is now an established photographer with his own enterprise and is no longer homeless.

A recent survey conducted by outdoor retailer GO Outdoors in collaboration with Mind, discovered 61% of Brits claim that spending time outside is where they feel their most content and unburdened1.

Damon Alexander-Cole said: “Speaking from personal experience, the benefits of being outside and active in the fresh air has priceless benefits to your mental health.

“In 2020 and some parts of 2021, I was at the lowest point I have ever been in my life, so I started up my monthly and Christmas Day hikes to show those feeling alone that there is support around and life does get better. I fell in love with the outdoors during a really difficult time and hiking literally saved my life.

“The support I have received for this year’s Christmas Day hike has been incredible, and I am so grateful that I can help raise awareness and funds for the mental health charity, Mind that supports those struggling like I was – bring on Christmas 2022!”

Charlotte Porter, Head of Corporate Partnerships at Mind, said: “We are incredibly moved by Damon’s story and we’re grateful that he’s raising awareness for Mind. We can’t wait to see the hikers wearing the limited-edition hats as part our partnership with GO Outdoors.

“The partnership encourages everyone to experience the great outdoors and reap the benefits nature has to offer. We are in a difficult time, with many of us feeling the lasting impact from the pandemic, and now the cost-of-living crisis on our mental health. The support we’re receiving from GO Outdoors will help us to keep our vital services running, including Mind’s Infoline, legal line, and our online peer support community Side by Side, so that we can be there for the people who need us most.”

Lee Bagnall, CEO at GO Outdoors, said: “Damon embodies everything we are working to support when it comes to getting active and outdoors.

“We are in awe of his story and are privileged to be able to support his endeavours alongside all the great work that Mind consistently do.”

5 ways o Eskom-proof your Christmas

Don’t let Eskom put a damper on your festive plans. As South Africans experience another festive season paired with stage 6 blackouts, anxieties around the possibility of entertaining without a hitch remain high.

Whether your plans are affected by load-shedding or not, guests will likely have experienced the same thing and will be appreciative of your efforts. With a little planning ahead and some nifty load-shedding hacks, you can ensure that you enjoy your celebrations whether on the grid or off.

Check the schedule

Many businesses have grown as a result of load shedding – including the load-shedding schedule notification app, Eskom Se Push (ESP). The app alerts users to changes in load-shedding schedules within minutes of their announcement. It also shares a detailed plan of blackout times and durations for every day of the week. With a little scheduling planning, you’re likely to be able to decide when might be best to do your cooking and entertaining.

Plan ahead of time

Once you’ve checked your schedule, plan ahead. Look at which dishes you can make ahead of time. Consider partially pre-roasting dishes like leg of lamb and turkey the day before and using an hour or two on Christmas day to complete the cooking time. That way longer roasts can still be served alongside other dishes, despite electricity cut-offs.

Items that might need to be store-bought include trifle, with its long setting time and salads with thin greens that could be wilted when they become too warm or too cold.

Go back nature

South Africans love any excuse to go back to nature and cook with fire. Thanks to the innovations of today, almost any food can be cooked on the braai. For roast vegetables, place chopped vegetables mixed with olive oil, salt, rosemary and cinnamon in aluminium foil over medium coals. Similarly, meats can be cooked traditionally over the braai along with braai-grilled vegetables like asparagus, sliced whole cobs of corn and peppers.

For a braaied turkey, place a stuffed and seasoned turkey in an oven dish half filled with stock. Place the turkey in the middle of the braai base in between two piles of hot wood or coal and keep cooking for 3.5 hours.

Include braaied desserts such as chargrilled pumpkin filled with ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce or Lindt smores sandwiches. Any oven dessert including bread pudding, malva pudding or cake can be made the day before and heated over low coals before serving.

Have ice buckets on hand

Keep drinks cool with ice buckets left around the house and ask guests to bring ice to help cool their drinks.

Cold dishes such as salads and desserts, can also be prepared ahead of time. If there is load shedding on the day of serving, there’s no harm in placing the dishes over ice for an hour or less to ensure that they are chilled at serving time.

Go out

Load-shedding-friendly restaurants do well when the power goes off, as it is just easier for some people to eat out than to plan their meals around the load-shedding schedule. Spots like the Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront in Cape Town and the Radisson RED Rosebank in Gauteng are open on Christmas Day and serve hot meals during load shedding. Most of the bigger hotel chains are open to the public during the festive season, however, remember to call ahead and make a booking to avoid disappointment.

HOME ALONE IS OFFICIALLY THE UK’S FAVOURITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME
• RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH NAMED THE NUMBER ONE ON-SCREEN SANTA
• OVER 1 IN 5 BELIEVE DIE HARD IS NOT A CHRISTMAS FILM
• BUDDY THE ELF IS THE UK’S FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM A CHRISTMAS MOVIE

Home Alone is the UK’s favourite Christmas movie of all time, according to new national research revealed today1.

The movie, originally released in December 1990, took 19% of the vote, beating out tough competition from Will Ferrell classic Elf (14%) and the festive favourite Love Actually (13%), according to the nationwide study carried out by Showcase Cinemas ahead of the Christmas period.

Elsewhere, in a closely fought race to be named the UK’s favourite film character from a Christmas movie, Will Ferrell’s performance as Buddy saw him land top spot, with 1 in 5 choosing the eccentric elf as their number one. Macauley Culkin’s breakout performance as Kevin McCallister (17%) in Home Alone landed in second place, while action hero John McClane (15%) from Die Hard rounded off the top three.

Not only was Buddy named the favourite character from a Christmas film, he was also named the number one character participants would like to spend Christmas Day with, taking 16% of the vote.

However, in the most controversial reveal from the survey, over 1 in 5 of participants claimed Die Hard is not a Christmas film.

And what is a Christmas flick without Santa Claus? With a whole host of actors taking to the big screen to portray St. Nick, it was Richard Attenborough’s performance in the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street that the UK named its favourite, taking over a quarter of the vote (26%).

Kurt Russell (20%) finished in second place after playing Santa in 2018’s The Christmas Chronicles, while Tom Hanks (18%), who played the voice of Father Christmas in animated favourite The Polar Express, finished in third spot.

To celebrate the Christmas period, Showcase Cinemas will be screening a range of festive flashback favourites at cinemas nationwide, including the UK’s number one – Home Alone.

Showcase Cinemas spokesperson, said: “Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year when it comes to the cinema. There are so many iconic films and moments from festive films throughout the years and Home Alone is a deserving winner in our nationwide poll.

“Our survey revealed that watching Christmas movies is one of the UK’s favourite things at this time of year, so we’re delighted to be screening a few festive flashbacks on our screens across the country.

“Whether its family favourites such as The Polar Express or the evergreen Die Hard, guests can come along and get in the Christmas spirit with a classic film screening in the lead up to the big day”.

What’s more, the survey also revealed the UK’s favourite song from a Christmas movie, with Bing Crosby classic ‘White Christmas’ (29%), from 1942’s Holiday Inn finishing as the favourite.

After being named the UK’s favourite Christmas movie, Home Alone also picked up number one in the nation’s favourite scene from a Christmas movie with ‘KEVIN!’ (19%) finishing ahead the famous doorstep scene (15%) from Love Actually.

The survey also revealed that the average Brit watches five Christmas movies a year, with only a third of the UK (36%) not watching a film on Christmas Day.

WORSE FOR ’WARE: DON’T LET HACKERS WORM THEIR WAY IN THIS CHRISTMAS
London, 20 December 2022 — For millions of Brits, Christmas and the new year is a time to relax alongside friends and family and enjoy a break from the stresses of work. Yet it can also be one of the most lucrative times of the year for cyber criminals, as they benefit from people letting their guard down online.
This month marks the 35th anniversary of the Christmas Tree Worm, a piece of harmful code disguised within a festive graphic that left a trail of destruction as it was shared among networks. It was the first example of viral malware and showed how festive cybercrime can flourish.
Today’s worms have turned far more high-tech. Holiday season hackers now use more sophisticated methods to lure their victims — from Christmas phishing emails and spoofed websites to bogus giveaways — so it’s important to know what to look out for.
Marijus Briedis, cybersecurity expert at NordVPN, has some tips to protect yourself from the scammers over Christmas and the new year.
1. BE CAREFUL WHERE YOU CLICK: Whether it’s the lure of last-minute presents or seasonal sales, online shoppers will be out in force this Christmas. In your hurry to bag a bargain make sure you check your cybersecurity to stay ahead of the hackers.

Avoid the temptation to click on pop-up ads or links to websites that you cannot verify. Use a search engine to find the retailer you want and activate antivirus software like NordVPN’s Threat Protection to check for any malicious sites. In the case of well-known retailers it pays to be wary of “typosquatters” who may have set up fake sites under similar names to try to trap unsuspecting visitors.

2. ROGUE DELIVERY: The Royal Mail strikes and the traditional surge in parcels over December have created a perfect storm for delivery scams to thrive. Typically, would-be victims will either be sent an email or text giving them an order number and tracking link for an outstanding package or missed delivery. Once you have clicked, a hacker knows your contact details and may use this to supplement the scam, for example, by asking for a delivery charge.

If you have received a message with a tracking link, do not click on it and cross-check any code with the delivery company’s website. Any suspicious texts should be forwarded to 7726, a free spam-reporting service provided by phone operators.

3. UNBOXED AND UNPROTECTED: Internet-of-things (IoT) devices such as smart watches, voice assistants and health trackers are among the most popular Christmas presents. Before you take your new gadget for a spin online it’s worth ensuring you take a few minutes to make it more secure. This can include changing the default password that came with your smart device and adding an antivirus or VPN to your router to safeguard IoT gadgets on your network.

4. A GIFT(CARD) FOR SCAMMERS: When it comes to picking a present for a hard-to- buy-for relative, online vouchers and e-gift cards are the new book tokens. It therefore might not be a surprise to receive a retailer voucher by email around Christmas, something hackers know only too well.

As well as links to fake vouchers that could contain malware, fraudsters may often trick people into buying genuine coupons and revealing their unique card numbers by posing as family members. To steer clear of these scams, be sure to verify any voucher offer on email with the relevant retailer’s website and always speak to loved ones on the phone before making transactions you believe they have requested.

5. A TAXING NEW YEAR: The Christmas and new year break is a popular time to tackle online chores and some Brits will be using it as a window to submit their self-assessment tax returns to HMRC ahead of the 31st January deadline. Yet be careful not to give extra money to opportunistic hackers. Thousands of UK taxpayers have been sent fake HMRC phishing emails and texts during 2022, with messages ranging from tax rebate offers to threats of arrest.

If you have to file a self-assessment return, be wary of any communications you receive as you are much more likely to be targeted by hackers. Keep an eye out for any HMRC copycat websites and remember that tax rebates in your favour are not common outside a game of Monopoly.

6. GIVEAWAY GRIFT: Without sounding like Scrooge, anything that seems too good to be true probably is — and this can definitely be said for a flurry of Christmas giveaway frauds. A recent example is a Cadbury Whatsapp scam. This involves you being sent a message through the messenger app including a link that will give you the chance to win a ”Christmas Chocolate Magic Basket”. Once clicked the link takes you to a quiz that encourages you to give away your personal data and then share the quiz with others.

Much like similar scams earlier in the year for British Airways, Heineken and B&Q, this preys on consumers’ faith in brands and love of a freebie. Save WhatApp messaging for your friends and family this year and don’t let a fraud, however sweet, sour your Christmas break.

NEWCASTLE OFFICIALLY CROWNED THE UK’S CAPITAL OF CHRISTMAS FOR 2022

• Newcastle is the nation’s most festive city, according to latest research
• Geordies are more prepared for the season than people in any other city
• The city has three of the UK’s best markets plus an iconic Xmas tree
• Newcastle is also the most likely city to experience a white Christmas

Newcastle has officially been crowned the UK’s inaugural ‘Capital of Christmas’, following the publication of new national research to celebrate the festive season.

A study by budgeting experts Park Christmas Savings, assessed the festive activity of every town and city across the UK, revealing Geordies to be the nation’s ultimate Christmas revellers.

Park data shows Tynesiders are best prepared financially for the festive season, with residents putting away more pounds ahead of the annual celebration than people in any other area.

Newcastle also boasts a host of the nation’s most popular and famous Christmas attractions, gets its Christmas lights on bright and early – and has a 33% chance of snow this December.

Front and centre of the city’s festive delights are its three buzzing Christmas markets, containing everything from Santa’s grottos to live festive music and locally sourced festive treats.

This year, they are bigger than ever extending into Grey’s Monument and Grainger Street, with mulled wine, mince pies, bratwurst, and plenty more on offer.

The city is also home to one of the country’s most iconic Christmas trees each winter.

The ‘Bergen Tree’ has been presented to Newcastle by the residents of Norway every year since 1949, to symbolise the nation’s gratitude to Newcastle for its support during World War Two.

The Park Christmas Savings research also looked at variables including the average cost of a weekend visit in December, number of tourists and social media appeal.

This year, Newcastle first stepped into the festive spirit earlier than most other UK regions – on 15 November – when the city’s Christmas lights were switched on.

Elsewhere, the Tyneside town is the joint favourite to enjoy a white Christmas in 2022, with a 3/1 chance alongside Glasgow and Edinburgh, according to latest odds.

Ian Thomas, Destination Director at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, which promotes tourism in the area, said: “Christmas is a time to make memories for life and spend quality time with loved ones, and there is no better place to do that than in Newcastle, and this accolade is testament to that.

“Our partners across the city work hard every year to ready the region for Christmas and give people from around the world the famous Geordie welcome.

“This year is out our biggest and best, with Christmas markets showcasing local traders and bringing local landmarks to life, such as Old Eldon Square, Grey’s Monument and the historic Grainger Market – the city is absolutely buzzing with festivities.

“We will be wearing the Capital of Christmas crown with pride as a destination where everyone is welcome, at Christmas and all year round.”

On top of a variety of festive delights in the city, when it comes to spending, Park data shows one in 35 Newcastle households uses its Christmas savings scheme to budget for the big day.

A considerable 73% of early bird Park savers in Newcastle’s actually confirmed and activated their Christmas 2022 savings plan before Christmas Day, 2021!

By paying what they can when they can on a regular basis, Park customers get to manage the cost of Christmas over the course of a year by starting early; the residents of Newcastle are more prepared for the festive season than people in any other city.

Katherine Scott, Director of Marketing at Park Christmas Savings, said: “We are delighted to today unveil Newcastle as the UK’s Capital of Christmas 2022.

“At Park, we already know that Geordies are savvy savers who get ahead of the curve because they are true Early Birds. Combine that with the huge draw of incredible Christmas markets and the nostalgic atmosphere it brings, the beautiful Bergen tree and the city’s festive lights and attractions and we have found our first ‘Capital of Christmas’.

“In true tradition, we also love that residents of the city are more likely than those in any other area to experience a white Christmas. There’s no other place that deserves the crown more!”

Scottish sports medical app revolutionising player safety secures £400k funding from former Rangers footballer-turned top doc

• ScribePro aims to transform player safety by ‘maximising care and ‘minimising risk’ in sports and events medicine
• Pioneering digital platform secures £400k investment from former Rangers player-turned top medic
• Gordon MacKay backs Scottish business believing ‘it will become leader in its field’
• ScribePro developed by top consultants in emergency and sports medicine, including Scotland National Team doctor, CEO Jonny Gordon
• Firm sets international growth target with predicted revenue of £4.5million by 2025

A Scottish firm that aims to transform the way sports and event medicine patient care is delivered is aiming to operate on an international scale after being administered a major funding boost by a former Rangers player-turned top sports medic.

Professor Gordon MacKay and wife Jackie have invested £400,000 in ScribePro, an innovative medical app platform that records medical interactions in real-time for clinicians working in team sports. Professor MacKay, who has been credited with pioneering sports career-saving surgery, has given his backing to the business, believing it will become a world leader in its field.

Founded in April 2018 and commercially launched at the start of 2021, ScribePro was set up to improve the welfare and safety of patients by making their medical information instantaneously accessible and transparent to all clinical staff in any location.

Already, the business has signed up users including medics working with the Scottish FA, FIFA and the SRU, as well as national associations across Europe and in the Middle East. A number of SPFL and SWPL teams have also joined the platform. This month (November), ScribePro has been working with 20 of the 32 Rugby League World Cup teams to enhance the medical care of players competing in the high-profile tournament.

The concept is the brainchild of Jonny Gordon, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the First Team Doctor for the Scotland National Team, and David Lowe, an Academic Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Co-Director of the EmQuire Research. The pair teamed up with top tech-savvy healthcare specialists to establish ScribePro after determining the need to bring the rudimentary paper-based systems in place for team managed sports into the 21st century.

Utilising a user-friendly portal that can be accessed on a desktop, tablet or phone alongside a companion app, ScribePro provides a portable digital solution to record clinical interactions between athletes and medical staff. Sports clubs at all levels including senior, development and women’s teams have adopted it, with the records able to be transferred seamlessly across different squads.

ScribePro will soon market its new FirstAid and Event companion apps alongside its flagship Teams system, the first to be introduced to the commercial market.

Explaining the concept, 50-year-old CEO Gordon, who is currently working with FIFA at the World Cup in Qatar, said: “The platform improves player welfare and safety with transparent, instantly accessible medical information available to all clinical staff. It can be accessed by anyone linked in a player’s medical team, anywhere in the world. It is also a tool for minimising risk to clinicians who are open to legal action.

“All too often medical information is stored as paper records, if there are even records at all. We also noticed it was quite common for there to be very little communication between different medical teams, for example club and international sides.

“The platform alleviates major GDPR and player health risks. The software is secure, user-friendly and affordable. As soon as someone who has seen the player and administered treatment enters the information, anyone else in that medical team can see it, instantaneously.”

With the significant six-figure inward investment, ScribePro, which currently has five full-time employees and is growing, will accelerate its market entry and route to internationalisation while furthering its product development and research, with a predicted revenue of £4.5million in 2025.

Professor MacKay, a renowned Consultant Orthopaedic Sports Surgeon who has held roles as the official surgeon for both Celtic and Rangers, the Scottish Rugby Union, Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup, switched his focus towards medicine after suffering serious ligament damage which brought his playing days to a premature end in 1990.

He’s since saved countless careers of sportsmen and women thanks to his world-leading technique to repair traumatic ligament injuries, adopted by elite surgeons across the globe.

The 58-year-old footballer-turned-surgeon, who played in the Rangers reserve team alongside Ally McCoist and Graeme Souness, feels ScribePro will also be a trailblazing force in sports medicine, believing its use will bring ‘massive’ benefits towards improving players’ safety and their treatments.

Commenting on his and his wife Jackie’s decision to invest £400,000 into ScribePro, he said: “When I was a footballer, I realised the insecurity of injury and just how devastating it can be. Simple problems can become a serious disability if they’re not addressed or identified at the appropriate time.

“I was also very aware of the lack of continuity or recording or evidence-based advice for players, not just in the footballing world, but in other sports and other disciplines.

“So when I heard about ScribePro and about what Jonny was trying to do in the world of sports medicine, I immediately saw the potential and the importance of this. I have a lot of confidence in Jonny’s clinical ability and when he explained the vision for ScribePro, I was very keen to do whatever I could to support their venture.

“The vision is also very timely – sport is looking for someone to take the lead in this field and provide something that allows medical information to travel with the player, to ensure that continuity. If medics have instant access to that information, it can dramatically improve the outcome for those involved in sport and ScribePro is really going to address this very successfully.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in due course it becomes the norm that clubs and associations expect people to be able to provide that kind of information and I believe ScribePro is clearly going to lead in this area of sports medicine.”

THE COUNTDOWN TO CLEAN-MAS HAS BEGUN

GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH THE ULTIMATE 12 DAY CLEANING COUNTDOWN

‘Tis the season to be jolly – but with Christmas just around the corner, many families across the country are feeling the stress of the festivities, as they begin to get their homes ready for the holidays.

Whether you’re readying your house for the arrival of the family, or you’re tackling that tedious mulled wine stain on your carpet, cleaning and laundry expert, Dr. Beckmann has given the gift of cleaning this Christmas, with a festive 12-day Countdown to Christmas top tips, to ensure your humble abode is merry and bright this festive season.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS CLEANING

DAY ONE: Dreaming of a GloWHITE Christmas
First things first… it’s time to rescue your Christmas decorations from the attic and give them a well-needed dust. To brighten up your snowmen, angels or snowflake soft toys place them in the wash alongside Dr. Beckmann’s Glowhite ULTRA to bring the faded colour back to life.

DAY TWO: A truly clean Christmas
Christmas is almost upon us, so it’s time for a clear-out. Pop your favourite Christmas classics on and go through your house top to bottom and get rid of anything you don’t need – ready for the new year! Don’t forget to clean those usually forgotten items such as handles, doorframes, and make sure to scrub at those skirting boards with a damp cloth after tackling them with a vacuum and duster to pick up any excess dirt.

DAY THREE: Winter windows
Windows are often forgotten about in the lead up to the festivities, but as your Christmas lights light up your homes, any sign of dirt is impossible to avoid. Give your windows a spruce with a glass cleaner, ensuring those mucky fingerprints are eradicated before the celebrations begin. If you don’t have any in the cupboard, simply mix white vinegar, distilled water and a drop of essential oil, then shake. Spray the solution lightly over the affected area and wipe to rid your windows of any unsightly marks.

DAY FOUR: Cleaning down the chimney
One of the cosiest parts of the Christmas is gathering round the fireplace, but charcoal often has a nasty habit of getting everywhere! You can eradicate these grinch-worthy stains by blotting the blemish with cool water mixed with normal washing up liquid. Finish by dabbing the area until the liquid is absorbed.

DAY FIVE: Merry mulled wine
Alcohol stains can be a nightmare before Christmas to get out of your carpets and furniture, especially mulled wine. If you have an unfortunate spillage, make sure you blot the alcohol with a cloth until the liquid is absorbed, then sponge with cold water. Dr. Beckmann’s Upholstery Stain Remover is great to have in the cupboard, ready and waiting for those stubborn upholstery stains!

DAY SIX: Tackle the teapot
Descale your kettle ready for the winter warming hot drinks. Fill your pot with a mixture of half water and half vinegar, leave to soak overnight. Rinse thoroughly in the morning to remove any lingering odours, then boil up some fresh water

DAY SEVEN: Give your appliances a 5-star service
Tackle the dishwasher and washing machine with Dr. Beckmann’s Service-it Deep Clean range. Pour the powder directly into the drum or bottom of your appliance, then select a standard cleaning programme and run the cycle. Home appliances are on a never-ending cycle during the holiday season, so using a specialised cleaner to banish the bacteria will ensure your clothes and dishes are left fresh and clean.

RENOVATION TRENDS FOR 2023, ACCORDING TO THE EXPERTS
NEVILLE JOHNSON FORECASTS WHAT’S COMING NEXT FOR HOMEOWNERS

The new year calls for fresh starts and new beginnings, with many people wanting to apply this within the home too. Decorating or making design tweaks each year is a great way to feel refreshed and keep your home in line with the season’s top trends, whether it be a fresh splash of paint to the walls or a full fitted furniture transformation. In 2022 alone, nearly half of homeowners (49%) planned to renovate for the year ahead*.
Premium fitted furniture brand, Neville Johnson, has a wealth of experience when it comes to transforming homes each year. Should you be planning ahead to renovate your whole home, or just considering a quick refresh, here are the predicted interior trends which will dominate 2023, according to renovation experts.
STAY AHEAD OF THE COLOUR TRENDS
Pantone’s Colour of The Year has been revealed as ‘Viva Magenta’, which means shades of vivacious pinks will dominate both fashion and interior moodboards in the new year.
Renovation experts, Neville Johnson predicts that homeowners will be much more darish in 2023 when it comes to their interiors – introducing eye catching shades that sparks instant joy into the room. Cari Bateman, Senior Designer at Neville Johnson said: “Shades of pink have been popular in 2022 and it looks like the popularity is only going to increase. We can see this colour being used as a wonderful accent piece amongst more neutral designs in larger communal spaces within the home.”
Neville Johnson’s bespoke pink dressing room is a perfect way to create a statement space within the home.

TAKE A NATURAL APPROACH TO MATERIALS

It is not just bright and bold colours that will be making its mark in 2023, as natural woods and tones are also set to inspire our homes in the new year. Softer blonde woods are coming through as a more a popular choice, paired with a neutral colour palette, to create a peaceful environment – an ideal choice for homeowners seeking serene spaces and that ‘Slow Living’ interior trend.

Cari Bateman, Senior Designer at Neville Johnson comments: “In 2023 we’re definitely going to see a continued demand for soft wood and wood effect finishes. The new year will see blonde woods being a popular choice, as they complement natural tones so well. Even woods like walnut can work well with oatmeal palettes, with the ‘natural’ shades being a timeless addition to any home.
“We’re also seeing lots of interior designers and celebrities focus on tall wooden doors with integrated wooden handles – which Neville Johnson predicts is going to be one of the key interior trends for 2023.”
Neville Johnson’s Under Stairs Study is a peaceful space that can inspire productivity. Its light wooden finishes mean neutral tones can be paired to create an airy atmosphere within the room. The addition of white cupboards creates a soft contrast, perfect for a space that is needed for quiet moments and concentration.

RECYCLE OLD TRENDS
This year, panelling became a firm renovation favourite with homeowners, as an affective alteration which gives a space a new range of depth. The new year will see this trend continue to grace our homes.
Cari Bateman, Senior Designer at Neville Johnson said: “The popularity of acoustic panels is showing no signs of slowing down. Slatted wood walls and panelling has been extremely popular this year and is only gaining more momentum going in to 2023. Mixing both darker and lighter woods, again for that natural aesthetic is going to be a big trend. And if you took part in the panelling trend the previous year, repainting in a new shade will revitalise the space.”
Neville Johnson’s family boot room utilises both practically and aesthetically focused design elements. The instillation uses soft panelling to give the classic design a contemporary twist, making it ideal for both modern and traditional enthusiasts.

Family Boot Room

Next year will showcase some bold colours and more natural finishes, and whether you take a statement or neutral renovation approach, there are many ways to enter into a new year with a refreshed home.
Samuel Brealey, Designer at Neville Johnson said: “It can be difficult to make a final decision when it comes to renovating the home, but interior trends really do help to inspire us and give us new ideas on how to transform our homes to our own personal tastes.
“Fitted furniture is such a simple trick to help transform a room into a space that is practical yet stylish. With such a variation of renovations to choose, ensuring your space is still on trend is guaranteed”.
With over 35 years’ experience in designing fitted furniture, Neville Johnson is the market leader in bespoke home renovations. The brand’s furniture renovations combine the flair of the UK’s top designers with the time-honoured skills of traditional craftsmen, all brought together with your personal selection of materials, colours, and finishes.

REINVENT YOUR HOME’S HISTORY WITH UPCOMING INTERIOR TREND ‘NEWSTALGIA’
DESENIO SHOWCASES THE NEW TREND THAT COMBINES OLD COMFORTS WITH CONTEMPORARY FINISHES

As we look back over the turmoil of the past few years, we’re forced to question not only the importance, but equally the relevance of style of our living spaces. For many, time came to a standstill. Old became new, and the new quickly became old.

It is no surprise then, that the latest interior trend which is dominating social media is ‘Newstalgia’. The new trend incorporates retro interior pieces alongside modern designs for a fun, blended look, where the future meets the past.

In our busy lives, in which the ever-dynamic rush of the future seemingly sweeps us off our feet, it is easy to forget the grounding comforts of our past. Newstalgia, however, enables us to fully embrace both the comforting hug of nostalgia with the dynamic jolt of the future.
From prints capturing the roaring twenties through to the swinging sixties and beyond, Desenio’s wide collection of posters are the perfect addition to any home, incorporating elements of the Newstalgia trend, and helping you to bring the past back to life.

Annica Wallin, Executive Creative Director at Desenio said: “Wall art is the ideal way to introduce new trends to your living spaces in 2023.

“The Newstalgia trend combines the rich history of the past with a fresh hope for the future – and we’ve seen this become popular in UK homes in recent months. By mixing retro items with contemporary designs, you can create a sense of style and playfulness bringing intrigue into your home for the new year.”

GINSTERS FESTIVE SLICE SET TO RETURN THIS CHRISTMAS FOLLOWING A CAMPAIGN TO BRING IT BACK FROM FANS
The festive chicken and stuffing slice will be back for a second year running, available to buy from supermarkets nationwide from 14th November 2022

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND – Iconic pastry brand Ginsters has announced that its limited-edition Festive Chicken & Stuffing Slice will return to supermarket shelves* on 14th November 2022, following a Twitter campaign where hundreds of fans of the comforting treat lobbied to see its return.

One fan commented “BRING IT BACK”, while another Twitter user said, “C’mon lads get to work!”.

The perfect lunch to get into the Christmas spirit, the Ginsters Festive Chicken & Stuffing Slice includes 100% British chicken and smoked bacon in a creamy sauce, baked with potato, and a sage and onion stuffing made from locally sourced veg (where possible) – all wrapped up in a light puff pastry and topped with a crispy sage crumb, yum!. For those who simply can’t wait until the big day for their festive lunch, the slice is enjoyed best after being heated in the oven for 20 minutes (even quicker in an air fryer) – Christmas music optional.

What’s more, costing just £1.65, not only does it make a warming and satisfying lunch, it does so without breaking the bank. So, shoppers who are in the 51% of the nation who say they’d love to have their Christmas dinner wrapped in pastry** had better run – not walk – to their nearest chilled aisle. Because once this limited-edition slice is gone… it’s gone!

Sarah Babb from Ginsters said: “We think our Festive slice is version 2.0 of the iconic Christmas sandwich… It’s great for lunch and has all the delicious festive flavours you’d expect, but it’s served warm, and is made using only locally sourced vegetables and British chicken and bacon, all wrapped in layers of flaky puff pastry instead of bread. What’s not to love?!

“We were blown away by the demand on social media for this to come back after we sold over a quarter of a million of them last year. We hope Britain enjoys eating them again this year as much as we’ll enjoy baking them!”

Revealed – the 12 mood-boosting fragrances experts say can positively affects your emotions

If you’re feeling low this January you’re not alone – more than two million people in the UK are said to experience the ‘winter blues’1. This figure rises further on the day dubbed as the most depressing day of the year – Blue Monday that’s happening on 16th January 2023.

But according to science, a well-chosen fragrance could give you a powerful pick me up.

Research by Mood Media has found that 75% of all emotions generated every day are due to smell2; and there are many fragrance notes long proven by biology experts to help boost your mood.

Jonny Webber from PerfumeDirect.com explains the science of scent and our emotions

“Your sense of smell is very closely linked to the part of the brain, the limbic system, that is responsible for emotion and memory.

“When certain aromas enter your body through the smell receptors, they momentarily find their way to the brain and commence using their soothing characteristics to affect your emotions. The limbic system also connects to glands that release hormones which in turn affect our nervous system and stress levels.

“Certain smells, such as citrus and musk have been shown to arouse the central nervous system, sharpening alertness and concentration, while other scents, such as lavender, nutmeg and bergamot, have a relaxing effect.

“In mood mapping tests, scents of grapefruit, orange and lemon were rated as happy and stimulating. Some citrus smells can reduce stress, such as the clean, fresh scent of lemon. “Citrus scents are incredibly popular in the world of fragrance, and they lend themselves to both masculine and feminine fragrances.

“Some scents are universally attractive, such as vanilla, where its main benefit is ‘evoking feelings of warmth and happiness’. Vanilla has been found to ‘quieten’ the mind and relieve tension, aiding sleep. Whilst floral notes, such as Jasmine, are known for ‘relieving depression and improving mood’.”

Jonny also highlights a clear correlation between rising sales of these fragrance types and the nation’s mood:
Jonny says: “The lipstick index was coined by Estée Lauder’s Leonard Lauder and relates to the idea that sales of affordable luxuries (such as lipstick, mascaras, chocolate and coffee) rise in economic downturns. Whilst according to beauty retailers this trend seems to be the case as we head into 2023, we have also seen a similar effect in the fragrance sector, specifically every January for the past few years.

“Overall sales of perfume have rocketed since 2019 as people turned to scent to uplift their spirits and bring a bit of positivity into their day-to-day lives. This is evidenced by the boom in the luxury fragrance market – in the first half of 2022, sales of women’s perfume rose 137 per cent3

“But delving deeper we have noted that sales of what we like to call ‘happy fragrances’ are a third higher in January than other fragrance types. Whilst searches on our site for fragrances containing mood boosting notes have gone up by around a quarter every January for the past five years.”

In need of a January pick me up – try these scents:
Fragrances with YLANG-YLANG

Ylang-ylang is made from the flowers of the herb Cananaga odorata genuina. This popular, tropical floral scent has been found in research1 to aid relaxation, reduce depression and alleviate anxiety when applied to skin or inhaled; it is also said to be an aphrodisiac.

We recommend:
Prada La Femme – a feminine floral scent with a blend of magnolia, bergamot, frangipani flower and ylang-ylang enriched with spices. Gucci Bamboo – a floral-woody fragrance that opens with accords of bergamot, leading to an exotic floral heart of ylang-ylang and casablanca lily, with a base of sandalwood, Tahitian vanilla and white musk. Cerruti 1881 Pour Homme – a refined and fresh aftershave, reminiscent of days on the Mediterranean. The heart of the fragrance combines ylang-ylang and patchouli for depth, along with lily-of-the-valley and cassia.

Fragrances with JASMINE
Jasmine is also a flower frequently found in tropical climates. While best known as an aphrodisiac, there is evidence that its aroma can effectively reduce depressive symptoms. Encouraging people to feel more alert is another key finding from studies into the beneficial effects of this scent. Researchers concluded that this optimistic scent could be useful for improving mood and as an anti-depressant.

We recommend:
YSL Black Opium – this glam rock fragrance is full of energy, a gourmand floral scent with a unique combination of orange blossom, pear, coffee, jasmine, liquorice, cedar, patchouli and cashmere wood. Gucci Bloom – a scent characterised by notes of jasmine, tuberose, and rangoon creeper, with the salty and sparkling florals of a sweet neroli accord. Hugo Boss Bottled Night – with base notes of Cardamom, Jasmine, African Violet, this is intense and spicy masculine fragrance.

Fragrances with CITRUS
Citrus scents can be incredibly invigorating, perfect for helping you feel more alert and energised, according to experts. The scent of lemon promotes concentration and has calming and clarifying properties that are helpful when you’re feeling angry, anxious or run down, according to Beverley Hawkins, owner of the Vancouver-based West Coast Institute of Aromatherapy.
We recommend:
Moschino Fresh Couture – with top notes of Bergamot, Mandarin Orange and Ylang-Ylang, this fruity floral fragrance is a modern take on a citrus inspired scent. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue – This fresh, floral-fruit scent is a tribute to Mediterranean life. With top notes of Sicilian Citron, Bluebell and Granny Smith Apple, it’s the perfect escapism. Armani Code – a timeless, sophisticated, sexy scent with a citron cocktail of bergamot and lemon with soft notes of olive tree blossom, warmed with guaiac wood and tonka bean.

Fragrances with ROSEMARY
Herbs, like flowers, can also have a positive effect on your mood. Rosemary is a fragrant evergreen herb native to the Mediterranean. Research supports the use of rosemary as a cognitive stimulant, with data showing memory improvements, boosted alertness, and enhanced focus. Some studies have even found it can improve brain function in some cases.
We recommend:
Davidoff Cool Water – inspired by the ocean, this clean and refreshing scent features top notes or Bergamot, fresh peppermint, lavender, rosemary, green galbanum, pineapple, violet, jasmine, honeysuckle and orange blossom.

Fragrances with VANILLA
A member of the orchid family, did you know that vanilla is a ‘happy’ scent? Studies have shown it creates positive associations and evokes feelings of warmth and happiness. It can also promote relaxation, calm feelings of anxiety and alleviate claustrophobia. Vanilla has been found to ‘quieten’ the mind and relieve tension, aiding sleep. It has a warming, sweet smell that is often used in oriental fragrances. Vanilla Is one of the most used scents in fragrances for both men and women; it makes for a perfect base note.
We recommend:
Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess – Alluring and sexy this fragrance showcases the velvety texture of tiare flower with creamy coconut, warm amber, sandalwood and vanilla. Narciso Rodriguez For Her – a sensual and provocative fragrance with base notes of Vetiver, Vanilla and Patchouli. Armani Stronger With You – this masculine fragrance contains spicy hits of pink pepper, fresh apple, violet leaves, aromatic lavender and base notes of cinnamon, glazed chestnut, amber and vanilla.

Sir David is by far the nation’s top choice, with a whopping one in five (21.3%) Brits selecting the much-loved nonagenarian.

He saw off competition from the likes of Barack Obama and Ant & Dec, who each rounded off the top three, with TV presenter, Jeremy Clarkson and songstress, Adele, completing the top five.
