Rule 19.2(d) The Quick Throw In

Rule 19.2(d) states that in order for a quick lineout to be taken, the ball that left the field of play must be the same ball used for the lineout AND the ball must not touch any person other than the person taking the lineout and the opposing team’s player who may have carried it out of play.

In the case of Wales Vs Ireland on 12 March 2011 the ball that was played was a different ball entirely and therefore the try that was consequently scored by Mike Phillps of Wales which secured the victory was illegal. In this instance, the fault lies with the touchline official who, following a confirmation request from the referee, erroneously confirmed that the same ball was used and the try should be given.
