For the generations that witnessed their achievements it must have seemed as if they were defying gravity, rewriting rules, bucking trends that were unbuckable. A unique moment that became the norm. After last Saturday, when Ireland beat Australia, we have another couple of names to add to the list of innovators and executions of the improbable.
The man is Les Kiss, Ireland’s defensive coach; the move is the Choke tackle.
Like the best ideas, the theory is simple. Under modern rugby laws if a ball is held up in a maul scenario then the attacking team lose the ball, the defenders get given the put in at a scrum.
