INTOUCH Rugby caught up with Ulster legend Trevor Ringland as he embarks on a new challenge in his career. In his own words:
“The example of rugby whether it is Ulster, Ireland or the British & Irish Lions is its ability to be inclusive and so build relationships between the people in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and between these islands. It promoted an inclusive Britishness and Irishness when others not only failed to do so but actually did the opposite.
As we look to the future, in sporting terms we can support a Northern Ireland Football Team, (look at the work and leadership they have shown in tackling sectarianism which was destroying their game) that promotes a Northern Ireland for all. In rugby we can support Ulster, Ireland and the British & Irish lions or in the Gaelic Athletic Association, bearing in mind the out-reach work they are involved in, and the concept of inclusion promoted by their Chairman, Danny Murphy, we can support the County in which we live.
The challenge is to stand against those who seek to exclude by standing up for the very simple concept of friendship that I found in rugby when playing.
Finally, politics exists whether we like it or not. It’s breakdown led to terrible consequences for our society which is going to take along time to heal. We should not leave it to those who hate the most and so it is incumbent on all of us who do care about the future to get involved. At the most simple level that means vote and encourage your friends to vote. If you can take a more active interest then get involved because we all know every team that plays is shaped by its members.”
