On Saturday morning we went to Portadown RFC where they were playing against Dromore Rugby Club. The games were extremely well organised and the superb Portadown facilities along with the coaching team and wider supporter base were in fine spirits as the conditions were truly perfect. Hardly a wind and bright sunshine! The rugby that followed across all 3 games was developed across the key areas of set piece, expansive rugby, use of the width of the pitch. These development organisations are focusing on the development of players and rugby across areas that include, mental health, personal development, social skills, focused of course in the context of playing great rugby!

Choke tackles were expertly implemented and the refs had no choice but to award the turnovers. Confident and well mannered players reflected the ethos of rugby in an environment where solid set pieces led to try scoring turnovers on five meter lines from lineouts, and scrums! Truly some of the most loveliest and satisfying tries come from these turnovers! They really really do!

Defensive lines and tackle counts where high across all 3 games. Again 13 year old players were doing as you would expect all the basics, choke tackles, attacking rucks, punishing isolated tackled players by going for the ball with perfect body position again getting the penalty as the player did not release the ball! Set pieces, turnover balls!

In defense teams where organising all the time, putting in their tackles then back on their feet, re-organising, re-organising, re-organising, defensive line, balls from scrum halfs at the back of rucks were like lightning, pick and goes were fast and with support, pick and go pick and go, make the yards, support secures the ruck, centers were making some of the sweetest line breaks you will see,

Tries, Tries, Tries!

Brilliant morning! We got shots of all three teams which can be downloaded and used for marketing purposes. Feel free to send these shots to local papers they are rights free and for your use, no copyright required. U14s CLICK HERE U16s CLICK HERE U18s CLICK HERE

Below are match reports compiled from all available sources, giving a little of a flavour of the pride and development and rugby being played at these innovative and healthy elite sports organisations. Below the match reports is a round up of scores.

VIRGINIA: U14s ‘A’ Team Continue Great Run in Qualifying League
Virginia U14s ‘A’ side travelled to Belfast on Saturday morning for game 7 in the Ulster Qualifying League. They took on Instonians on a warm sunny morning, and like the weather they started brightly.
The visitors dominated the early exchanges, in particular at the set piece with Jaco Englebrecht and Killian Collins dominating proceedings at the scrum, and Michael McKeon-Boyle very much in charge of the line out. Despite all this early pressure it was the hosts who scored first, when they picked up a loose ball inside their own 22, and a couple of missed tackles allowed them to run the length of the pitch and touch down under the posts. The subsequent conversion meant Virginia trailed 7-0.
This was a bit of a wake up call for the visitors, and they were soon deep inside their opponents territory again. The forwards also turned the screw at the breakdown, Jake Sullivan was superb throughout the game, and ably supported by Robert Lochaden and James Smith they edged towards the try line. Scores were soon level when Michael powered over under the posts, and Niall Carolan slotted the conversion.
After the kick off Virginia again edged their way forward. Quick hands at the back of the scrum by Jason Henderson almost set the backs free but a combination of poor handling, and great defence by the Instonians backline meant the sides went in at half time level at 7-7.
The second half brought much of the same. Virginias forwards really putting on a strong show, and if the hosts did get possession any threat was soon snuffed out by an on fire Niall Branagan, Jamie Osbourne, and Thomas McGearty. The threat Instonians posed on the wings was also dealt with in a much better manner with great tackling from Conor Hetherton, Adam Sherriff, Cian Doughty and Cormac Brown.89
The hosts however with some fierce tackling of their own were still keeping Virginia at bay. In the end a clever grubber kick from Adam Charters was chased into the corner, with Jake O’Brien just beating his opponent to the ball to touchdown, 12-7 to Virginia.
Instonians were still in the match though, but Virginia continued to pressure. The handling was much better in the second half, and it eventually paid off as Mark McSharry ran a great line to beat the defence out wide, and Nialls second conversion made the final score 19-7 to Virginia.
They have now won six out of seven games games so far, and have a rest next week before facing Armagh ‘A’ on Saturday 6th December.
Our Premier League side had no game this weekend as Rainey Old Boys conceded the fixture. They remain unbeaten with six wins, and sit four points clear at the top of the Ulster U14s League. They travel to Banbridge on Saturday 29th November for their next fixture.
Virginia RFC U12s take part in Ulster Branch Maxol Blitz in Monaghan
Virginia RFC U12s traveled to Monaghan RFC today to take part in the Maxol sponsored blitz in strong number. 21 players turned up which meant we could field 2 teams for 2 games each . Things started badly when Donal Maguire took an accidental knock which meant he couldn’t take part in the games, knowing Donal determination he’ll bounce back soon. First game was v OmaghRFC. Virginia played with great intent dominating territory and going through the phases, with great work at the breakdown from Mark Gibney, Kieran Duffy and Patrick Sheridan, but good defence from Omagh just stopped near tries from Nathan Tobin and Ciaran Levi Valensi in the first half. The second half was just as intense with good line breaks from Luke Doyle and Cormac Monaghan, and try saving tackles from Jake Duffy, Ben Curran and Cormac Lynch . it was looking like it may be a scoreless draw when Ciaran stormed over for a try in the corner with the last play . Final score 1-0 win for Virginia. In the second game Virginia played a strong Banbridge side, and although our lads put in a good effort, and despite the best efforts of Malachy Walker and the rest of the lads, some excellent back line work was just too good for our defence. This game ended 7-0 to Banbridge. After a break for lunch the side that lost to Banbridge regrouped and with a few tweaks to structure and a lot of lessons learned from their first game , they took on Omagh. This time good work from our forwards Darren Kavanagh, Eli Caffrey and Cathal O’Reilly, and some strong ball carrying from Luke Morris and Cormac O’Reilly, allowed our back line some space, and led by Conor Nulty, Oscar Erikson and Calum McCabe were able to stop anyone coming down the wings. Cejay Reilly was excellent at scrumhalf, and with trys from him, Luke, Conor, and Nathan Tobin Virginia won the game 4-2. In the last game of the day we took on Armagh. This was a physical game with the Virginia lads showing their metal. It was end to end with hits and plenty of strong rucking. Kieran Duffy ran in 2 tries, with Jake Duffy adding a 3rd to give them a 3-1 victory.vv
A big thanks to Monaghan RFC , Ulster Rugby and Maxol for running a great event . And thanks to our players, and of course the parents who came along to show support. The lads travel to Creggs in Roscommon next Saturday for their final game pre Christmas.
Under 18 Girls Opening League Match results in a win for Virginia
Following on from the girl’s successful visit to the Ballymoney blitz the previous weekend which seen them win both their games against Maone and Ballymoney with a scoreline of 2-1 and 6-0 respectively, the girls kicked off their first league match of the season on Sunday afternoon at home in Deerpark. The game started at an intense pace with both sides fighting hard for possession in what proved to be an evenly matched event. The first score of the day came from Laura Keogan who then converted her try, leaving the score 7-0 at half time. Enniskillen girls responded in the second half with two tries of their own, successfully converting the second. In the last ten minutes of the game the Virginia girls upted their pace and came from behind when Leah Gregory scored their second try, again converted from the trusty boot of Laura Keogan. The final seconds of the match seen the Enniskillen girls on the Virginia try line fighting hard for possession, but the Virginia girls denied them access to the try line, with the final whistle confirming the score 14 -12 in the home teams’s favour. Well done girls.
Under 15 Girls beat Enniskillen 33-0 in League
The under 15 girls kicked off their second league match of the season with a win at home against Enniskillen. The match was played at a fast and furious pace, and Virginia dominated from the start. First try of the game came from Lisa Mullen who successfully converted same. Ciara Byers added a second which remained unconverted and Eimear McEnroe then added a further two with Lisa Mullen scoring the fifth of the match. Lisa was in excellent kicking form converting all of the last three tries also. The match ended in a very comprehensive win for the home team with the final scoreline 33-0. Thanks to all those who came along to support the girls. Training next weekend for both the girls teams in preparation for next league match. Europa Takeaway sponsors the Under 18 Girls Jerseys. Many thanks to our sponsor Europa Takeaway who sponsored our Under 18 Girls’ new jerseys. Before the match kicked off on Sunday afternoon we had a visit from our sponsors who presented the jerseys to the girl’s captain Amy Whitley.

Randalstown faced an uphill struggle in more ways than one in this league encounter at a sunny Dunmore Park which provided an excellent playing surface.
On paper Ballymena looked formidable opponents, their numbers boosted by a couple of summer signings from the ‘town’ and the Randalstown lads still gaining experience as a unit. Randalstown with a full complement of players and even replacements this augers well for the rest of the season and they started brightly with Daniel Cullen orchestrating things from scrumhalf and Ruari Griffin putting in some great tackles. All was in vain however as Ballymena ran in the tries to practically end the contest by half time. Ryan Hume made a welcome return to the centre putting in thundering tackles with Danny Webb having some great runs. A couple of injuries didn’t help the Randalstown cause either side of the break. In the second half Randalstown after superb play from Curtis Gay found themselves almost scoring before losing concentration at the scrum and gifting Ballymena another score. Peter Longwell was having a good game in his latest role as flanker and Andrew Stewart at prop again having a solid game. With the injury toll mounting the referee brought the game to a close with Ballymena well deserved wide margin victors but again the Randalstown lads played hard to the final whistle and hopefully the learning curve can continue.

Randalstown u18 12-0 Ballymena u18
The heavy overnight rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the home team as they kicked off and set up camp deep in the Ballymena half. The home pressure finally told and when Randalstown were awarded a penalty, inside centre Michael O’Connell coolly stepped up and slotted the ball through the uprights for a deserved 3-0 lead. The match itself was a disjointed affair with the referees whistle constantly disrupting the fast tempo game which the home support craved. Space for both backlines was at a premium with the ball rarely reaching the speedy outside backs. O’Connell kicked another penalty to leave the half time score 6-0.The second half started with the Randalstown pack deciding to keep the ball tight, and for the next 20 minutes they completely dominated the opposition. The ball retention and game management was superb and the constant pressure forced Ballymena to infringe illegally as the visitors fell foul of the referee. On two such occasions Michael O’Connell stepped forward to successfully add another six points to his and Randalstown’s tally. As the game entered the last ten minutes Ballymena finally managed to get their hands on the ball and put sustained pressure on the home team. Time and again they sent their big runners towards the try line but on every occasion they were met by the strong aggressive defence which has developed within the squad this season. In fact, this team has not conceded any points in its last three outings, which is as pleasing to the players as the tries they score. The final whistle sounded with the home team running out deserved winners in this hard fought local derby. On a day when the whole squad excelled, several players deserve special praise. Michael O’Connell was again exemplary with the boot having missed only 1 kick at goal all season. Number 8 John O’Donnell was immense in defence, continually throwing his body into tackles to stop the Ballymena charges. This weeks MAN OF THE MATCH goes to BRENDAN CONNOLLY. This was easily his best performance in a Randalstown jersey, and the clever no7 was a constant threat all day. He led the defensive line well and his unselfish work at the breakdown allowed the home team to control possession, win the match and maintain their position at the top of division one. Next Saturday we travel to Carrick in the league. All support welcome.
Randalstown U14 vs Ballymena U14
Randalstown U14, U16 & 18 youth teams hosted local rivals Ballymena Rugby Club at Neilsbrook playing fields for their next premier league on a dry, autumn morning. Conditions were perfect, if a little wet underfoot, for the game of rugby.
UNDER 14 MATCH First Half Randalstown received the kick off and immediately tried to take on the Ballymena forwards by attacking straight up the middle of the pitch. Scrum half Oran Gilbert got caught with the ball and found himself at the bottom of a ruck. Fly half Con McGee tried to dig the ball out but knocked on giving Ballymena the first scrum of the match. The Randalstown pack attacked the scrum and managed to turn the ball over. Scrum half Gilbert box kicked over the Ballymena defence and the Randalstown chasing backs caused the opposing fullback to fumble the ball. Randalstown’s now dominant forwards maintained the pressure pinning Ballymena on their five yard line. After a number of plays and changes of possession Randalstown’s number seven, Dominic O’Connor, powered his way over out wide to score the home sides opening try after fifteen minutes. The difficult wide conversion was missed by Oran Gilbert. Ballymena restarted and Randalstown sustained the pressure. From open play in the middle of the pitch scrum half Oran Gilbert passed the ball out to his back line and to centre Peter Cullen who cut a line down the wing through the Ballymena defence to score the home sides second try after just three more minutes of play. The conversion was missed by Oran Gilbert.
Ballymena restarted again and after a very short exchange of play Randalstown got the ball out to their back line and this time Randalstown’s other centre Stefhan Gabbidon-Lyttle utilised all his speed to make a run from the half way line to score under the posts. The try was converted by Oran Gilbert. After the restart the home side kept up the pressure looking for a final try to end the half. It came from Dominic O’Connor who powered over the line after picking up the ball at the back of a ruck and forcing his way straight through the opposing defence. The difficult wide conversion was missed by Oran Gilbert. First Half ended 22 – 0 to Randalstown. Second Half Randalstown restarted the second half and it soon became obvious Ballymena were intent on making a game of it. After some exchanges of possession in the middle of the pitch Ballymena finally got the ball out to their backs and their outside centre made a superb run through the home team defence to score an outstanding try under the posts. During the first half Randalstown were able to keep the Ballymena back line in check but they had now found a way through and Randalstown were on the back foot. The easy conversion was missed. Play restarted and there followed a near carbon copy of Ballymena first try. Randalstown had taken their eye off the ball for a moment and allowed Ballymena back in to the match. The try was converted. Randalstown were determined not to let their grip on the match slip any further and took the match to Ballymena. After sustained forward play the ball went to the backs and to centre Peter Cullen who made a superb powerful run from outside the twenty two to score twenty yards in from the touch line. The try was converted by Stefhan Gabbidon-Lyttle. Play restarted and the home side forwards pushed the visitors back to their five yard line under the posts where the referee gave Randalstown a penalty. Quick thinking by scrum half Oran Gilbert who took a quick tap and passed the ball out to the back line and Peter Cullen forced his way over the line to score the home sides last penalty. The match finished 34 – 12 to Randalstown. A great improvement by ALL players, a real team effort. Randalstown MAN OF THE MATCH goes to Dominic O’Connor for his efforts in the pack, tackling, breaking the gain line and contribution to Randalstown’s win with two tries. Randalstown Under 14 Team – Peter Cullen, Brandon McAllister, Oran Gilbert, Eoin McDonald, Cormac Devlin, Con McGee, Dominic O’Connor, Stefhan Gabbidon-Lyttle, Joel McCavana, Jack Johnson, Ross Swan, Ciaran O’Neill, Miguel Correia, Marco de Silva, Fionn Johnston and Matthew Luke. Coaches – John Kennedy, Sean O’Connor and Ivan Millar

BLUEBULLS 16s 14 -53 FRIENDS SCHOOL
Dungannon Bluebulls faced Mark Henderson’s well drilled and disciplined side. The difference between the two sides came down to Friends firstly winning the battle of the ruck with their backrowers especially adept at getting over the ball in the ruck and secondly Friends ruthlessly taking their chances when Gannon gifted 5 tries to them from miskicks, missed tackles and offsides.
The referee (and rightly so) was taking no prisoners at the breakdown and continuously punished the Bluebulls for playing the ball on the ground, failing to roll away, failing to stay on feet and coming in from the side. We only had ourselves to blame.
We also made life difficult for ourselves in denying ourselves a proper warmup, stretch and prep because of late arrivals. Management have no doubt that this lack of prep cost the team some of the tries in the first third and the benefit of momentum from which confidence comes. We must improve on this aspect of our game!
In the second third we did not capitalise on the sun in their eyes and the gradient of the pitch. Our confidence was still lacking and this manifested itself by the three miskicks which gifted Friends three tries. The three miskicks came from Friend’s blitz defence putting pressure on our kickers.
In the final third we at last threw off the our shackles and rust and played the way we can with Ryan Ross and Harry Crawford-Sinnamon showing alot of determination to cross the white wash with Michael O’Neill converting both. Friends managed three tries and one conversion.
In Summary we held our own in the scrums and lineout. Our forwards competed well in the tackle. We were physically stronger at the end of the game. Our backs did not show their true worth. Management are of the view we played well below our potential and yes on our day they were there for the taking. After speaking with some of the Bluebull players their disappointment was plain to be seen.
We are glad they have a sense of pride and management know these guys are worth all the effort and time. They will lick their wounds and improve.

Ballymoney U16s produce five star performance against City of Derry.
On sat Ballymoney RFC U16s went to play city of Derry looking to go top of the league and they succeeded in style..The match was kicked off by C.O.D into the waiting hands of Ballymoney’s second row Danial Brennan who tucked the ball under his arm and crashed into the on rushing City of Derry pack. This was always going to be a bruising encounter by two sides boasting several Ulster youth players in both teams.Ballymoney drew first blood in the second minute, from a well rehearsed team move off the back of a scrum in Derry’s 22 with slick hands and good running lines by Ballymoney’s backs C.O.D’s defence opened up for Graham Donnelly to touch down for Ballymoney’s first Try. Converted by outhalf Stevie Culbertson 0-7 Ballymoney’s pack were working hard at the breakdown to produce clean ball for the backs who were making good ground on most of their attacks but just not converting possession into points. Approaching halftime city were awarded a penalty for hands in the ruck in Ballymoney’s half. Derry’s number 8 took a quick tap and drove hard into the toon’s 22 which gave Derry’s backs a good opportunity to level the score which they took with their centre finding a small gap in Ballymoney’s defence to crash over for a well deserved converted Try. Halftime score 7-7Ballymoney kicked off the second half disappointed to have lost their lead, knowing they needed to up their game they produced a terrific Try through centres James Orr and Ewan Noble, it started at a lineout deep in Ballymoney’s half, hooker Philip Beattie stole the ball when Derry’s second row jumper slapped the ball down, Beattie rushed through before Derry’s scrumhalf could gather the ball, he then made a quick break and passed to scrumhalf lee Culbertson who wasted no time finding his brother Stevie at 10 who put a high cross field kick into the arms of the Toons winger Alastair Eakin he then drew in the defender and hit a miss pass inside to Ewan Noble who traded skilful passes with James Orr, with only the fullback to beat James drew him in and popped the ball back to Noble to touch down between the posts for the toons best Try of the day again converted by Culbertson score 7-14 From that point on Ballymoney tore into city of Derry at every opportunity and the next try came shortly after. Derry were starting to tire from the amount of defending they had to do with Ballymoney’s pack taking turns to run in their pods at them, scrumhalf Culbertson spotted a gap, sold the defence a dummy pass and crashed over for try No 3 conversion missed from the touch line. 7-19 Ballymoney’s forth came from really nice interplay between forwards and backs resulting in big Donnelly getting his second of the day converted again by Culbertson score 7-26 to Ballymoney The fifth and final try of the day was scored by James Orr who had a great game in defence and attack. Converted by lee Culbertson who was playing his first game back after recovering from a broken collar bone only six weeks ago.Final score City of Derry 7 Ballymoney 33 Every player showed their metal in this match and they proved to themselves that hard work pays off as this win takes them to the top of the league.. Man of the match goes to Ewan Noble because he tackled everything on the day including the corner flag and scored the best worked try of the five. Ballymoney youth section would like to thank the hospitality and generosity of the ladies of City of Derry RFC for the outstanding spread of food provided to us on Saturday. Training is on Tuesday nights from 6pm if you fancy giving rugby a go everyone welcome.

Under 18 match report. Newry 17 Ballynahinch 19.
Newry started the game with a high tempo and scored in the corner through Maffhew O Donavan after a consistant period of pressure with the hard running Anton McLoughlin and Coalan Philips breaking the gain line. Newry were penalised a number of times in the first half for “language” infringements. Ballynahinch scored and converted two tries to lead at half time 14 points to 5. From the off in the second half Newry refocused their efforts and their reward was a great try from outhalf Jack Hegarty stretching under pressure in the corner after great continuity from the Newry side. Ballynahinch scored and unconverted try quickly after the resrart but Newry rallied again with Blaise McKnight scoring close to the posts and a successful conversion bringing thr score to 17 19.Newry pressured and got their reward for a fine display and were awarded a penalty at the end of the match but having gone quickly were held up when over the line to gift the win to Ballynahinch.
A fine display with training moves paying dividends time and again and with Connaught, Ireland and ex Ulster player Willie Faloon an interested spectator came of second best in a fixture they should have won.
Newry Under 16 Match report Newry 7 Ballinahinch 5
A fairly contested game by a well drilled and large Ballinahinch side. Newry revieved to start the game off, Thomas O’neill taking the ball and running a hard line up the heart of the Ballinahinch forwards. As the game progressed Newry’s forwards were hit hard by Ballinahinch’s strong forwards, Newry reliased the back is where the tries would appear. Cillian Smyth securing rucks allowed Newry’s backs to attack, after tireless attack from Newry it was eventually rewarded with a try through Niall Mckevitt which was converted by Rory Mcparland. This left Newry in the lead but with a large task ahead. Ballinahinch continued to use their strong forwards to go around the rucks making small amounts of ground, barely getting over the gain line because of Newry’s quietly brilliant defence. Newry kicked off to start the second half and once again failed to turn the possession into attacking ball, but none the less and outstanding defensive game continued. A few dodgey referee decisions resulted in Newry going a player down 20 minutes before the end. Ballinahinch finally got through after the referee gave penalties against the Newry side, scoring in the corner but the convertion proved too much for the Ballinahinch kicker. Newry held on to the ball for the dying moments and when the time was up Aodhan Dalton was able to kick the ball into touch for another win for the Newry side. A scrapy win for a side which should have been beaten more comfortably but Newry hope to continue their form into their next game against Lisburn. Newry have now taken the number one spot in the league.
U14 Newry 0 Ballynahinch 29
This was a game of 2 halves. The first half was dominated by league leaders Ballynahinch who put 29 point past the home side. Newry seemed slow and lethargic and found it difficult to get a foothold on the game whereas Ballynahinch settled well and played some breathtaking rugby.
The second half Newry played brilliantly after presumably been given the hairdryer treatment during the interval. Defensively they were first class and never missed a tackle, offensively they were very creative and were very unlucky not score on a couple of occasions. This is a team growing in self belief sitting 4th in the league and will be a lot more competitive during the second half of the league campaign

Valley U15 ladies get revenge on Dungannon neighbours Clogher Valley ladies U15 team got revenge on Dungannon with a comfortable 31-0 victory at the Cran. Clogher Valley U18 bounce back from last weeks defeat at Ballynahinch with a superb display of running rugby,
with Dale Hall scoring what must be a club record of 5 tries. The Valley started well, putting the visitors under pressure at the break down. A scrum 10 meters from the Lisburn try line, gave Dale Hall the opportunity to break and drive the 10 meters to open the scoring. Lisburn bounced back and put the home side under pressure 5 meters from their try line. A clearance kick was charged down giving the Lisburn forward the chance to equal the scoring…… see more at http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/cloghervalleyrfc/news/valley-u18-beat-lisburn-by-over-50-points-1335373.html
