Limavady v Omagh 2
Saturday, 18th December 2021
Limavady entertained Omagh 2nds on Saturday in what was the final game of the Conference League. Going into the game Limavady knew that a victory would bring them their first trophy of the season. With several players not available Limavady fielded a very young side with eight players having come through the Academy.
The game was twenty minutes old when Omagh were the first to record points as they managed to get through the home defence. The rest of the half was scrappy however Limavady managed to get two tries just before half time through, firstly Jim McCartney and secondly Jack Connor, rounding off an excellent backs move. Peter Wilson converted both of these tries to send his team in at half time leading 14.7
The second half started well for the home side. Brandon Maxwell went on an excellent run and fed his captain, Ben Riley to race in under the posts. Conversion again was good. This gave Limavady a little breathing space however this was short lived when Omagh scored the try of the match following good handling and support play. With twenty minutes still to go Limavady knew they needed to lift their performance and that is exactly what they did. Full back, Jim McCartney rounded off the scoring when he sped in, in the corner. Both sides tried for a further score, however with nothing forthcoming the game petered out into a victory for Limavady by 26 points to 14
Limavady can now enjoy the holiday season and recharging of their batteries before resuming their attempt on securing promotion to Division 1. Coach, Graeme Eastwood is delighted with the efforts put in during the first half of the season, particularly with the attitude of all of the players and in particular with the progress of so many young players.
Limavady 2nds were also in action as they entertained Cooke 2nds. They too recorded a fine victory by 31 points to 19. Five tries were scored, thus achieving the additional bonus point. Try scorers were Aaron Reilly, Austin Hargan, Stephen Fallows, Daf Griffiths and Matthew King.
