Rainey progressed into the Quarter Finals after a comprehensive victory over Donaghadee in the Crawford Cup. The Magherafelt boys got off to a great start as captain Colin Patterson picked from a ruck close to the line to barge his way over after brother Ian Patterson took play deep into the Dee 22”. Caolan Moran kicked an easy penalty two minutes later. Rainey then had to rejig the backline as out half Kenny Irvine suffered an ankle injury and had to play the remainder of the game on the wing. With the whole team displaying great passing and offloading in the wet conditions, the floodgates soon opened.

Geoff Ewing showed great strength to crash over the line after a catch and drive from the pack. James McBride and Padraig O’Neill both showed their opposite numbers a clean pair of heels as they cut through a weak defense on several occasions to claim two tries apiece. 26 tries have been scored so far this season by this pair. Prop, Ryan Deehan displayed his running abilities to set up good field position in the centre of the pitch. From here Conor Magee spread the ball wide and again Mark Donnelly and Padraig O’Neill took play into the 22” from where a pass to the supporting Geoff Ewing saw him score the try of the game as he dummied his way through three defenders to score and raise a enormous cheer from the large crowd of supporters. With half time approaching, another attack started inside their own half saw the ball passed between Padraig O’Neill , Mark Donnelly and a marginally forward pass by James McBride denied Gavin McGuckin a score under the posts.

The second half saw Donaghadee score a try within the first few minutes by their young out half. After that, normal service resumed as Gavin McGuckin crossed the line after Ciaran McIvor motored up the middle of the pitch to give an inch perfect pass to the in-form hooker. Caolan Moran finished from close range after more great scrummaging from the pack. The final say went to Colin Patterson as he received an inside pass from Gavin McGuckin to take the score over the sixty point mark. The game ended fifteen minutes early as Donaghadee had had enough. PowerNI Man of the Match goes to flanker Geoff Ewing who turned over an incredible amount of ball and scored two great tries in an all action display.

The whole team and management wish James McBride and Keiran McCann all the best as they leave for pastures new in New Zealand and Florida respectively.
