After trailing 12-0 in a very poor first quarter, Rainey Old Boys showed the backbone they will need this season to turn things around and take the points with a last minute try from new flanker Rory Winters. They almost managed to throw it away when, following a great take and break by second row Stewart from the restart, they lost possession and had to scramble back ln desperation as the Kilbogget Park side swooped to within ten yards of the Rainey line. When the move broke down, the sound of the final whistle was heralded by the Rainey camp which was mightily relieved to have sneaked a 21-18 victory.
It turned out to be a long afternoon in Killiney for the visitors. Midway through the first half, Rainey forwards O’Neill and Rutledge went down injured at the same time. The former, vice-captain of the side, required treatment which caused a delay of thirty-five minutes. Fortunately, the latter was able to return after resting a damaged wrist………………..
