Queen’s 3XV travelled to Roughfort for what turned out to be a closely contested game against the Academys 2nd team. The match started at high tempo with both sides making some strong runs and crunching tackles. Early on the contrasting styles of play became obvious, the home side had the upper hand in the set piece with the honours going to the university in the open. Academy were first on the board with a well taken penalty some 10 minutes in.

0-3

The remaining 30 minutes of the first half saw Queens play to their strengths more effectively with quick rucks, fast ball and an expansive approach. The payoff for this came through tries scored using the wide channels by fullback (insert name) and left winger (insert name) the first of which was converted successfully.

12-3

The half ended with Queens somewhat in control and Academy struggling to put pattern to their play.

Academy came out in the second period prepared to play to their advantages, their set piece dominance was now complemented with a tighter game plan and an increased use of their powerful rolling maul. The Queens backline were now starved of possession and much of the play was concentrated in the university 22. Academy spurned several 3 point opportunities opting to try and batter their way over the line however Queen’s defence was superb and kept the home side out. After 30 minutes of building pressure Academy finally scored through a rolling maul, the try was converted.

12-10

After the try the tension in the game seemed to dissipate slightly and the game briefly opened up. Queens were able to run effectively with the ball, finding good field position and securing a penalty for their efforts with 6 minutes left in the contest.

15-10

The dying minutes were controlled by the home team and several tap penalties ensured a high paced finish. With 30 seconds left on the clock an opportunistic pick and go sent one of the Academy pack in from 15 meters to draw the game. The successful conversion gave them the lead with almost no time for Queens to retaliate.

15-17
