Match Report
Limavady v Randalstown
Saturday 18th January 2020
Limavady returned to Cup action this week when they welcomed Randalstown back to the John Hunter Memorial Grounds. With Randalstown having run Limavady close a few weeks ago in the league fixture the home side anticipated another difficult encounter.
It was Randalstown who got on the score sheet first when, after only ten minutes their centre, Matt McWhirter slid through a gap in the home defence. This served to waken Limavady up and from there during the rest of the first half they played some exciting rugby rewarded with four tries. The first of these came following a good break by Jody McMurray before feeding Jamie Millar who rang in strongly to touch down under the posts. The second try came from the hard working Luke Montgomery as he showed good strength to evade several tackles and dive in. Next up, following another free flowing move, resulted in Jamie Millar slipping a pass to his outside wing, Matthew Haslett who showed a good turn of speed to race in and touch down in the corner. With all of these tries converted by Luke Faulkner Limavady now had breathing space. The fourth try came just before half time as Jim McCartney by way of his trademark dive for the line managed to dot down in the corner. The final scoring of the first half saw Randalstown narrow the gap when their Second Row, Dean McCrory took advantage of weak tackling by the home defence as he made his way over the line.
Half Time: Limavady 26 Randalstown 14
The second half proved to be a very scrappy affair with the referee’s whistle heard too often. The only try came mid way through the half when leading try scorer, Stewart Roddy ran in to secure a further five points. Luke Faulkner again added the extras. Peter Wilson came close to scoring when following a sharp break was stopped just short of the line. Apart from that there was very little else to excite the spectators with two sides cancelling each other out.
Full Time : Limavady 33 Randalstown 14
With the draw for the next round having already been made Limavady will travel to 1st Division side, Carrickfergus on 1st February. This will be a good test for this young Limavady side. Limavady will be in action again next Saturday when they will entertain Lisburn in their first league action of 2020.
Limavady 2nds were also in action this week when they played Ophir. Limavady proved much too strong for their opponents with the game blown up early as they led by 66 points to nil. Try scorers were David Craig (3), Jack Elliott (3), Aaron Reilly, John Purcell, Brandon Maxwell, Simon Logan, James Scott and Matthew King. Harry McAleese converted three of these tries.
