Limavady turned their attention this week to the Cup when they travelled to Omagh to take on their 2nd XV in the first round of River Rock Towns Cup. Omagh fielded a particularly strong side with several 1st XV players getting a run out. Limavady put up a tremendous display running out victorious by 11.10 The basis of this victory has to be attributed to the defensive display by the visitors with several big hits coming in from Clive Scott, Stuart Simpson and Luke Montgomery. Twenty five minutes of the first half had elapsed before the scoreboard was troubled. Limavady were awarded a penalty on Omagh’s ten metre line which Peter Wilson slotted through the middle of the posts. Omagh then managed to get their first points when, just before the half time whistle, they managed to touch down in the corner. With the conversion missed the referee brought the half to an end with the score just favouring the home side by 5 points to 3
The second half was very much same again with Omagh trying to increase their lead but found themselves running into a brick wall that was Limavady’s defence. It was Limavady who would again score first when Peter Wilson slotted his second penalty of the afternoon. Limavady would then stretch their lead further when, following the best move of the match, the ball was moved wide to Stewart Roddy on Limavady’s left wing. Stewart still had work to do as he showed a tremendous turn of pace to sprint in and score in the corner. With a slender lead now of six points the question was if Limavady could hold out for the final twenty minutes. Omagh came back and closed the gap to just a single point when their winger scored again. With the conversion going a-begging this led to a very tense finale. Try as they might Omagh looked to find another score however due to excellent commitment from Limavady’s defence the score was to remain the same right up to when Peter Wilson cleared the ball to touch to close out the game.
The Coaching staff and supporters were delighted with their team’s efforts and now await, with anticipation, their opponents in Round 2
