Ards v Limavady
Saturday 12th January 2019
Limavady returned to League action this week with an away trip to Ards. Having beaten them twice this year already an away win was anticipated. Unfortunately, after a bad day at the office, Limavady were to suffer only their second league defeat of the season. Playing into a strong breeze Limavady started the game badly, conceding three penalties in the first ten minutes which Ards out-half duly accepted to put his team nine points into the lead. Limavady managed to get themselves back into the game when Jim McCartney squeezed in to score in the corner. For the rest of the half Limavady tried to get their noses in front but found themselves running up against a resolute Ards defence.
Half-Time: Ards 9 Limavady 5
With the wind now in their favour it seemed likely that Limavady would overturn the deficit. They managed to get across the try line twice only for the referee to bring them back for infringements earlier in the moves. Limavady had most of the possession and territorial advantage but due to silly handling errors and bad decision making in the final quarter Ards were able to defend their line. Limavady’s inability to win consistent line out ball and a number of penalties against them didn’t help. It is a rare occurrence in rugby for a half to remain scoreless but that is exactly what we got here leaving Ards to run out victorious by nine points to five.
Next week sees another away trip, this time to Lisburn, and an improved performance must be evidenced if promotion is to remain a viable proposition this year.
