Match Report
Limavady v Ards
Saturday, 7th December 2019
Limavady entertained Ards at the John Hunter Memorial grounds this week. Recent encounters between these two teams have been close affairs and this week proved to be no different. Ards had the better of the first twenty minutes in this game. The enthusiasm of their young players coupled with silly mistakes from the home side enabled the visitors to take the lead through their out half, Taylor Nutt when he crossed for the opening try. He also added the extras to give Ards the early advantage. After twenty minutes Limavady introduced Jonny Lees off the bench and this was to trigger a positive response from the home side. It was Lees who was instrumental in setting up Limavady’s first try when he battled his way to the line. Having been stopped just short he was able to get a pass away to the supporting John McCollum who dived in under the posts. James McBriar converted to draw the sides level. Two minutes later excellent finishing from Jason Kerr, when he outpaced his opposite number, gave Limavady the lead which they would not surrender right to the end of the game.
Half Time : Limavady 14 Ards 7
Limavady were aware that a better start to the second half was required than they managed in the first. After two minutes Peter Wilson eased the nerves when he scored try number three. Another successful conversion from McBriar gave Limavady the breathing space they craved. Ards would not lie down though and after a period of sustained pressure they got their second try when their left wing squeezed in, in the corner. The conversion was missed to leave the score at 21.12 in Limavady’s favour.
The Ards side started to tire over the last fifteen minutes and in that time Limavady scored a further three tries. Matthew Haslett secured the bonus point which he raced in for the fourth try. Next up was Stephen Dickie and the final score achieved by Russell Blair.
Limavady were made to fight for this result, nevertheless it stretches their unbeaten run in the Championship to seven games and sees them five points clear, with a game in hand, over their nearest rivals, Lurgan. Next week the side travels to Lisburn where again they will be tested however with confidence high they are hopeful of extending this winning sequence further.
