Match Report
Donaghadee v Limavady
Saturday, 28th September 2019
Limavady travelled a distance this week-end to take on last year’s promoted side, Donaghadee. The game was played in lovely warm sunny conditions, suitable for the free-flowing game that Limavady prefer.
Limavady started brightly and scored their first try after only five minutes when Matthew Haslett finished strongly in the corner. The second try followed shortly after when a piece of individual brilliance saw Number 8, Daniel Irvine sprint from inside his own half to score under the posts. Luke Faulkner duly converted.
In the twentieth minute Matthew Haslett coming across from the opposite wing was able to draw the last defender and slip Stewart Roddy in for try number three. Luke Faulkner again added the extras to push his side clear by 19 points to nil. At this point it seemed to be just one way traffic, however due to a combination of Limavady easing off the throttle and Donaghadee raising their game there would be no further tries before half time.
Eight minutes into the second half Jamie Millar would get the score board ticking over again when he ran in to score following good work by Daniel Irvine. Luke again converted. The next score would go to the home side when they were rewarded with a fine try by their out half, Danny McBride, when he outpaced the Limavady cover to touch down under the posts.
Limavady responded positively and managed to score their fifth try of the afternoon. Daniel Irvine, playing his final game before setting off on his travels to New Zealand was the man on target. Four minutes later, flanker Jonny Lees was rewarded for another hard working performance as he got his much deserved try when he finished off some good team work. Peter Wilson, taking over the kicking duties, added the extra two points to stretch the lead out to 38.7.
Whilst the score board would suggest this was an easy encounter for Limavady this was not in fact the case. Donaghadee continued to compete and deservedly scored their second try when Centre, Chrissie Hamilton managed to get over the score line.
Limavady finished the game off strongly, scoring two further tries. Firstly Peter Wilson, playing only his second game back after a shoulder operation, was on hand to take the scoring pass from skipper Jody McMurray. Ben Riley rounded things off in the last minute with the final try. With Peter successful with these two conversions Limavady ran out victors by 52 points to 14.
Man of the Match today, Daniel Irvine now sets off to explore life in the Southern Hemisphere and the club wish him well. He will be missed for his enthusiastic displays and expertise at the base of the scrum however there is no doubt that the players will step up to the mark. Five points today keeps Limavady top of the table. No game next week.
