Match Report
Clogher Valley v Limavady
Saturday 30th March 2019
The final Saturday of the season saw Limavady travel to third placed Clogher Valley for a game that would decide where this years plaudits would lie. Limavady knew that a win would clinch the title but also that a win for Clogher Valley would see them top the table
This game proved to be the proverbial cliché “a game of two halves”. Limavady enjoyed most of the territorial advantage in the first half and indeed played some very good rugby. On the referee’s whistle for half-time Limavady had the slight advantage of 12.5 having scored two tries from Matthew Haslett and John Purcell and a conversion from Peter Wilson to one try by the Valley.
Immediately at the start of the second half Clogher seized the initiative to score an equalising try from a five metre scrum. Limavady did manage to get their noses in front again following a penalty from Peter Wilson but this was as far as it went for them. Clogher hit back with three very similar tries from a line out and maul to power over the line. With the home side now leading by 25 points to 15 and time running out Limavady knew that they needed to do something to get back on level terms however in trying to run the ball out from under their posts a pass was intercepted by Clogher’s centre to run in unopposed under the posts. Following a successful conversion the referee brought proceedings to a close.
Final score; Clogher Valley 32. Limavady 15
Congratulations to Clogher for a well fought campaign and best wishes to them as they return to Championship 1 next year. For Limavady it’s a few weeks rest and then here we go again. Limavady should not be too downhearted as this has been an excellent season and the players should take great credit for the enjoyment provided to the Limavady supporters.
