Match report

Ballymoney v Limavady

Saturday, 28th October 2018

Limavady travelled across the mountain this week to take on their neighbours, Ballymoney, in a local derby. Having narrowly lost their last two games they were keen to get the show back on the road. The game turned out to be a scrappy affair with neither side playing the rugby that they are capable of. The game was littered with penalty after penalty. Ballymoney only managed to get into Limavady’s 22 once in the first half and yet found themselves 10.0 ahead at half time thanks to a converted try and a penalty. The one time that they managed to get within the final quarter resulted in an excellent try when their centre took advantage of poor Limavady defence to score under the posts. They later added a further three points from a long range penalty. The home defence held out, even after having a player yellow carded for repeated infringements, to leave the half time score Ballymoney 10 Limavady 0

The second half was mostly same again with Limavady having most of the possession but failing to convert this into points. On several occasions they found themselves in a good attacking position but their line out was just not functioning on the day thus allowing Ballymoney to clear their lines. The referee’s patience was tested to the limit and he again issued a yellow card to a Ballymoney forward. On the next play he awarded a penalty try to Limavady following an infringement at the scrum. With only three points now separating the sides Limavady pressed for the lead. This was achieved when, following quick thinking by Jody McMurray, he managed to glide through an open passage in the home defence. Peter Wilson added the conversion to allow Limavady to get their noses in front for the first time of the afternoon. With Ballymoney having offered little attacking threat all game Limavady managed to see out the final ten minutes for a deserved win.

Next week Limavady return to the John Hunter Memorial Grounds for another derby game against Coleraine University (UUC), kick off 2.30
