Match Report
Ballymoney v Limavady
Saturday, 30th October 2021
This Saturday was an historic day for the Limavady Club in that they fielded three senior sides for the first time in a long number of years. The 1st XV travelled to Ballymoney with the 2nds and 3rds having home games against Ballymoney 3s and Strabane 2s respectively. To make the day even better all three sides recorded victories with over 100 points scored in total.
The 1st XV travelled to Ballymoney to take on a strong Ballymoney side. The game was played in pleasant conditions and it was the home side who settled the better. Within twenty minutes Ballymoney found themselves 14.0 in the lead following tries from Dave McKeeman and Wilf Scott. Limavady managed to stem the tide and get more into the game. Following a great break by Jodi McMurray he slipped a pass to Jim McCartney who managed to cross the line and in the process of rounding in under the posts somehow managed to drop the ball as he tried to place it. This was a blow however Limavady continued to press and were rewarded with a score just before half-time by Ben Riley. Peter Wilson converted to leave the half-time score looking a little healthier at 14.7 to the home side.
Penalties were exchanged early in the Second Half which took the score to 20.10. Due to sheer doggedness on Limavady’s part they managed to wear down their opponent and succeeded in scoring two tries through Ben Riley and then Brandon Maxwell. Both tries were converted to give Limavady the lead for the first time on the day. Ballymoney pressed hard for another try and almost achieved this as they were camped on Limavady’s line in the final minutes. The ball was held up over the line and with the new rules this year Limavady were able to drop kick the ball to safety. A few minutes later the referee blew for time with Limavady extending their unbeaten run.
This was a game where possibly the better team on the day lost however, as a certain Premiership Football Manager said, “sometimes you just need to win dirty”
Final Score: Ballymoney 20 Limavady 24
The 2nd XV won their game, also against Ballymoney, 47.12 with tries from Devon Bratton, Jack Craig, Joel Stirling, Daniel Tranter, Ryan King-Magee, Graham McAleese and Ben Keightly
The 3rd XV defeated Strabane, 36.10 with tries from Simon Logan (3), Jacob McCay, Alex McLaughlin and Adam Hutton.
