Junior League Sect 4
Even though they won this important game the 3rdxv will be disappointed with their overall performance.
Four points were at stake as the game was played as a double header so possibly the team were subdued in their approach, victory being the object
Omagh started well enough attacking constantly and opened the scoring when an Omagh kick ahead looked too strong but the alert Jamie Lagan accelerated after the kick and touched down and with Ryan Scott’s excellent conversion led 7-0.
Portadown now started to use their big heavy forwards and kept Omagh on defence for long periods and reduces the margin with a penalty.
Omagh could only manage a few break outs but did not add to their tally and started getting a lot of penalties against them
Skipper Kane’s half time talk seemed to lift team out of their lethargy and had a good 15 minute spell. Firstly a fine passing movement in the backs saw Ryan Scott run hard ,shake of would be tacklers and score at posts to convert his own try.
Soon afterwards a similar movement but to left hand side saw Jason Gallen power his way over for an unconverted try to lead 19-3.
From this point Portadown put Omagh under great pressure as the lighter Omagh forwards struggled to contain their opponents and conceded 2 tries to narrow margin to 6 points
Many penalties were also conceded which left many Omagh players at a loss to explain.
A relieved 3rdxv gallantly held out to final whistle and gain 4 valuable league points
Young players A.Shortt and D.Porter had useful games and are gaining good experience
On Saturday Omagh have a crunch game against nearest rivals,Queens Univ.3rdxv in Omagh which will have a bearing on league title destination. Team selection will be crucial
