Boyces’ Men Rack Up Another Big Score
Portadown 4 XV, under the charge of Richard Latimer, took on Hollywood 2XV at rain drenched Chambers Park on Saturday afternoon following their impressive win at Ballymoney last week. Portadown again racked up another impressive tally by breaching the visitors line 12 times and kicking 7 conversions to finish 74 – 0 winners.
The visitors travelling with only 14 men kept Portadown at bay for 16 minutes before Robinson skated over from 25 metres under the posts for the first goal of the afternoon. Playing into a strong wind Portadown kept the ball in hand and on 25 minutes Murray struck the line again under the posts after setting off from deep in his own half. Next on the score sheet was P Caldwell. He scored on the left, taking two defenders over the line with him. His score followed a lineout on the Hollywood 5 metre line. A clean secure from Lyness and from the ruck Robb broke left to see Caldwell home on 27.
The hosts stuck manfully to their game plan of ball retention and close control playing into the wind and this paid off for them as next was two well worked tries for young wing Oliver Hunniford. Again with Robb pulling the strings at half back the backs interchanged to leave hapless Hollywood chasing shadows with Hunniford cutting inside on the scissors from the right to score on 34 and the second by chasing a chip through from Graham. B Murray finished the half with a mazy solo run from the 10 converted by Robinson to close the half 36 – 0.
The second half followed in the same vein. Hollywood failed to make 10 from the restart and from the resulting scrum Robb trundled the half of the pitch unchallenged to score his third of the season with his teammates standing dumbstruck.
Portadown now with the wind at their backs cranked up the pressure and further tries from P Caldwell wide out following slick interplay on 50. Robb again on 53 after McBurney showed some nifty basketball skills on the right to feed the halfback for another under the posts.
Robinson added another two tries on 55 and 58 min the second was a length of the pitch effort after G Caldwell fielded a restart kick on 22m line. Mr Latimer called an end to the afternoon’s proceedings on 60 minutes when Thompson again stole against the head on the Portadown 10 meter line. The break left fed Lavery to coast home for his second and the teams, backs only, twelfth of the day.
Next week Portadown look forward to hosting Ballymena 4XV at Chambers Park for the first top of the table clash.
