“YOUR JUST NOT FAST ENOUGH DADDY !”
That was the cry from the side-lines on Saturday afternoon 10 minutes into the first half by 4XV Captains son Max Boyce. No not the comedian. But it had the desired effect as the veteran forward romped over for a hatrick of tries in the first half to leave Portadown with a 21 – 3 half time lead against a hapless Monaghan side. The visitors were clearly suffering from their late arrival and a number of late additions to their team, but they stuck doggedly at their work throughout the contest.
Boyce followed on the heels of fellow forward Keightly who stormed over from close range following a well-controlled driving maul at the line out deep in Monaghan territory.
Robinson added the extras and had definitely brought his kicking boots this week as he was uncharacteristically successful on the day, converting six from seven efforts. He also scored the try of the game as he followed up his own chip through and ran home after hustling out the opposition full back in the chase for the line.
That put the game beyond the visitors who rallied for a consolation score under the Portadown posts following a superb mazy run from their left wing to offload for the touchdown.
Portadown add further to their tally with scores at the close from S Boyce and Adams who both wrong footed the defence and ran home from 20 metres.
