Sunday 07 September 14, saw the Perennials take to the pitch at Deramore for the opening fixture of the season against Belfast Harlequins. The fine weather and a desire to impress President Colin McKee and Captain David Elliott ensured a good turnout of players, with 31 players vying for the coveted Perennials jersey. Harlequins also had excellent representation and an enthusiastic crowd looked forward to an entertaining match – they were not to be disappointed.
Harlequins started the first quarter strongly, racing ahead to a two try lead within ten minutes, and things were looking ominous. A moment of inspiration was required, and Davy Barbour provided it with a ridiculous dummy pass and side step to dance through the Harlequin’s defence and score under the posts. With the score standing at 2 tries to 1 and the Perennials in possession, Peter Sandford threw a wild pass behind his own backline for Quins to race through and touch down. This was to be the start of several misdemeanours by our immediate past captain, and questions were raised regarding his Saturday night antics.
