Sat 19th Oct, 11:00am. Omagh 92 – 22 Civil Service
Six of the best for Joseph! by Kevin Murnaghan
It’s not every day that you score 6 tries in one match but that is what Joseph Mc Garvey did.
Joseph might have been forgiven for being a bit tentative at first, given that this was his first appearance after suffering a thumb injury a number of weeks ago. It was soon clear though that Joseph wasn’t going to hold anything back when he raced through for his first try in the first minute.
Soon it was to be a case of déjà vu for the Civil Service defenders as Joseph left them sprawling in his wake time and again. On one occasion the Civil Service tackler did manage to get him to ground but Joseph simply sprung back to his feet and raced in for another try.
Joseph was not alone though as the Omagh boys scored 14 tries in total. Richard Laird continued his scoring run with 3 tries of his own with Matthew Murnaghan and Jamie McElroy both scoring twice. Daniel Monaghan scored the other try. Richard Laird and Matthew Murnaghan between them converted 11 of the tries.
Although all of the scores came from the backs the foundation for this impressive victory was laid by the forwards. Even though the Civil Service pack were significantly bigger the Omagh boys managed to produce a steady supply of ball for the backs to attack with.
John Paul Murray played a captains role up front with Niall Alexander and Simon Creane to the fore yet again. Thomas Boyd, Matthew Kerr and Dylan Walsh got through a mountain of work whilst Rory Lowry, Krystian Kazmierski and Jamie Moreland enjoyed good runs with the ball in hand.
Behind the scrum Aimhirgin Duffy once again showed that, with correct technique and the right attitude, even the biggest opponent can be brought to ground. He also got plenty of opportunity to run with the ball whilst Rory Murnaghan and Alex Dillon flourished on the wings.
The key to all was the direct running, good handling and, above all, the superior rucking by the Omagh boys
