The RaboDirect PRO12 may take a break over the next couple of weeks as attention focuses on the Rugby Word Cup finals in New Zealand, but it does so on the back of a record breaking 6th Round.

The omens were good on Friday night when Glasgow Warriors’ Duncan Weir kicked a tournament record equalling 8 penalty goals, he’s now safely landed his last 13 kicks in a row and has a success rate of over 83%. Elsewhere in Ulster, Benetton Treviso recorded their third straight tournament win, the first time the Italian outfit have put together 3 victories in a row.

The records kept tumbling on Saturday when Aironi’s try bonus point collected in their 26-37 defeat by Cardiff Blues, was not only the club’s first try bonus point, but the first one in the tournament by an Italian team. Blues also picked up a try bonus point in the same match, the first time both teams have scored four or more tries in the same a game since Leinster played Edinburgh in May 2010.

Ospreys 17-13 victory at Thomond Park maintained their 100% winning start to the season, taking their opponents’ 18 month home record in the process – a week after Munster had ended a tournament record run14 wins in a row. Ospreys are now 6 points clear at the top of the table, with Munster, Leinster and Cardiff Blues the other teams occupying the Play-Off Zone.

271 points were scored in the six RaboDirect PRO12 games over the weekend (including 25 tries) the highest total since Round 3 last year, whilst the tournament’s top try scorer, Nick Williams, has claimed half of his team, Aironi’s, total tries so far this season.

The RaboDirect PRO12 resumes on Friday 28 October, with some great games to look forward to, especially for fans of Ospreys and Ulster, as both teams are just one victory away from recording 100 wins in the history of the tournament, a feat so far achieved only by Munster and Leinster.
