Last Wednesday night saw the next installment of the first round matches take place of this years Nutty Krust Floodlit Tournament. The draw brought together Ards Under 19s v Carrick Under 19s.
There was a minutes silence before the game in respect of Patsy Irwin, mother of Brian, Niall and Lyn (Irwins Bakery, Sponsors of the Nutty Krust Tournament)who passed away on Tuesday night .
Carrick opened the scoring on 3 mins with a try coming from a good rolling maul from the preceding lineout with No 8 Ryan McGonigle, awarded the touch down . The extra points were added by Adam Campbell. Ards had a good chance to score when a back pass was intercepted on the 22 but the chance came to nothing. Carrick had a chance to extend their lead on 20 mins with a penalty but the resulting kick fell shortof the posts. From a poor clearance kick within the Ards 22, the ball was picked up by Marcus Brush to run in and score. Adam Campell converted the try to make the half time score 14-0 in Carrick’s favour.
The second half was a more even affair with Ards cutting Carricks lead to 7 points with a try scored by No 18, Adam Coulter. This was converted by Ards outhalf, Jordan De Pledge. Carrick ran in two more tries after this , The first came from a good break from the lineout with scrum half, Adam Reid, passing to Ryan Hamilton to score in the corner, The conversion was missed but the Carrickfergus team had a 19-7 lead. The second try was a classic centre break by a Carrickfergus centre which led to No8, Ryan McGonigle, scoring his second try of the game. The conversion hit the post but the Carrickfergus team now had a 26-7 lead. Ards responded with a try scored on 57 minutes by their centre, Adam Baird.The conversion was missed to leave the final score at 26-12 in Carrick’s favour.
The Man of the Match award went to Carrick’s No 9, Adam Reid, for his all round performance in the course of the game. The presentation of the award was made to Adam by Clive Bowles, Manager of the Ulster U19 team. .
Next Wednesday’s match at Chambers Parkwith at 19.45pm ko is Malone U19’s against Randalstown U19’s.
