STEPs Club For Young People receives £1,000 award
Vodafone award will help fund activities for young people in Weymouth

29th March, 2018: Members of STEPs Club For Young People are celebrating after receiving £1,000 from Vodafone UK. The charity collected the Vodafone Community Connection Award last week after staff in its Weymouth store chose the deserving cause.
STEPs Club For Young People – founded in 1964 as Weymouth Boys Club – opened a brand new centre in 2013 following a £3 million capital grant from the government’s Myspace Programme. The club was set to close in 2016 when Dorset County Council ceased funding for all youth centres in the county, and was saved by the charity STEPs who took over the running. Since the new centre opened 5 years ago, over 3,000 young people have joined the club and benefitted from the activities available. Each year, the charity requires substantial fundraising to cover building maintenance costs, staff salaries and to run its programme of activities for young people.
Tom Lane, Principal Youth Worker at STEPs Club For Young People entered the charity for the award and said “Our work provides young people with educational and developmental opportunities as well as crucial support. Currently, our focus has been on improving young people’s health as well as enabling them to gain confidence and develop self-esteem and a range of skills. On behalf of the trustees, staff and young people, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to Vodafone and those who nominated us for this fantastic award, which will be put towards funding new activities and projects at the club.”
Vodafone’s Community Connection Awards, launched in 2014, have already made a difference to more than 160 local communities across the UK. Selected by local Vodafone staff and aimed at supporting local causes, the awards have been used to help support everything from new equipment for soup kitchens and day centres for the elderly to helping people with disabilities take part in sporting activities.
Chris Stewart, Vodafone Store Manager in Weymouth said, “We are delighted to be able to help STEPs Club For Young People – they do amazing work helping to engage young people in Weymouth. It’s a pleasure and a privilege to support the hard work and dedication shown by Tom and all of the other volunteers.”

Q: The locales mentioned in your books – rural Tennessee, the Smoky Mountains and Aspen, Colorado – are all quite magical and romantic.Whydoyouthinkthose were the perfect backdrops for your novels? A: The locales in my stories are characters too…as much as the people are. I try to describe these two particular places so that the reader can feel completely immersed in the romantic environments. I’m personally a very sensory person, and when I travel, I really take my time to soak in the sights, sounds, and smells ofmyfavoritedestinations. For example, I think very few fragrances are more intoxicating than that of a campfire burning. I grew up building forts in the woods with my brother in West Virginia, so maybe that smell takes me back to my happy childhood days, so it’s fun to revisit. Tennessee and Colorado are two of my favorite places for sure, so they were easy to describe.
Q: As a writer, what draws you to the romance genre? A: As a former journalist, I’m a bit of a newshound. I watch my fair share of current events programs because I think it’s important to be informed. As we all know, there is some pretty heavy stuff going on inourworld,soIfinditimportanttobalanceallofthat hard news out with a little “escapism.” As for the romance part? I can’t help it. I’m a sucker for a happy ending. All you need is love, am I right?
Q: Are any of your characters based on real people? A: Yes, but I won’t tell you who. I’m sure they know who they are. ☺

She’s also wounded, and very private about her past. The third book is also set in Aspen. At least as of my writing this!
The Hesse Creek Series has been so fun to write. I enjoyedpullingatleastonecharacter from “Walland” into “Seeds of Intention” (Garrett)…and now another character from “Seeds of Intention” into the thirdbooktocontinueexploringthatnarrativemoredeeply. Readers of “Seeds of Intention” might guess whose story gets told in the third book. We’ll have to wait and see if they’re right!

An Interview with JET WIDICK
What first inspired you to begin writing poetry? I wrote a lot of rhyming poetry when my boys were little and then things got incredibly busy and it took a backseat to much more important things such as work, raising the boys and building a rock solid foundation. It kicked back up again after one of the boys had a bicycle accident (Battered not Broken,) and then went full send into writing again after a 10 day hiking trip in Vancouver, Squamish, and Whistler, and shortly thereafter inspiration from a trip to Laredo, Mexico and then the trails of Vail, Colorado. Being outside, in nature, under starry skies or surrounded by birds and tall trees brought out this whole creative side that I had tucked away in my back pocket.
Did your writing change after your Celiac diagnosis? Not directly related to it, but–once I was well and not malnourished (my only obvious symptom) it really took off. Recovering fully from Celiac took awhile, and navigating that lifestyle was something I had to learn. There were no experts or wise queens to help me. It was trial and error and that is why I launched glutenfreesage.com to help other people successfully navigate this new way of living… and then the poetry blossomed; mixed with many other beautiful things that followed. I would have to say my whole life I was artistic, but it was impractical for me to go that route when there were mouths to feed and lots of work to do. I prioritized other things first, so writing and poetry was something I set aside. I don’t advise it in retrospect. I now know you can do both. Everyone’s situation is different. Leading a full and balanced life is easy when you’re well, so I try not to be to hard on myself during that my Celiac went undiagnosed. My main goal was to have an amazing family, and–with everything that was going on–I’m proud and grateful for how that turned out.
Where do the ideas and themes in your poems come from? Real life, kindness, sweetness, nature… love!
How did you decide to write and self-publish three books? I was helping a lot of people hit goals and I LOVED that on every level. Being behind the scenes and handling minutiae of the people you love is beautiful. Then there came a time, however, when a wonderful friend asked me to think about what I want to do for myself. What sets your soul on fire? That’s when I made glutenfreesage.com, and then the poems just came from every corner of my heart.
What would you say to anyone skeptical of the healing aspect of poetry that you’ve discovered? It heals! In a major way. It connects, rebuilds, warms. Poetry is everything. It’s your whole heart for your whole life in words.

Individually designed, sustainable greeting card collection aims to help time starved parents save money and end last minute rushing.
A former art director, magazine designer and now mum has found a way to save parents time and money on year-round special occasions and greetings cards which are both ‘green’ and distinct.
‘A Year of Cards’ has been thought up by Ellie Good, who rapidly discovered after having children that the need for being organised when it comes to friends’ birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions – as well as just the need for the odd greeting card now and then – was mostly a last minute rush and not very cost effective.
She said: “As soon as a family comes along we are all rushed for time. All too often I was thinking s*** I need to get out and buy a card for this that and the other. It was always a last minute rush to find something suitable and ended up being more expensive buying individual and pretty ‘generic’ cards.”
So she designed a set of 40 cards in pack which cover everything from Christmas to different birthdays, to good luck, house warming, romantic and just blank for anything else which comes up over the course of a year.
She exhibited the range at a local street party and found there was a gap in the market.
The designs are printed on recycled materials with eco friendly ink based on vegetable matter and come in at 88p per card as opposed to the usual £2.50 for many other individual cards.
“A Year of Cards is designed to help time starved parents with children up to their older teenage years who have lots of friends as well as yearly events such as Easter and Christmas. The packs use less packaging so is cheaper and more sustainable to produce.” she added.
