Ophir RFC hosted its annual 10 a side tournament for Year 9 pupils on Thursday 15th November. Five local schools took part in the tournament which is run by Ophir’s CCRO Gavin Robinson as part of the schools rugby development plan.

An amalgamated team from Edmund Rice and St. Patricks played Boys Model in the first semi-final with Boys Model running out eventual winners after a very even game. In the 2nd semi-final, Monkstown beat a tough Glengormley High side and progressed to the final against Boys Model.
The final proved to be a great spectacle of rugby from both sides with Monkstown scoring 2 tries in 3 minutes to secure the win, but a great effort from the Boys Model side ensured they finished the game on a high with a try from their centre.
Monkstown held on to win the trophy for the first time and teacher Stuart Kyle praised his teams efforts and also the Boys Model who played the final with great spirit.
The trophy was then presented by Ophir School Liason Jim Robinson to Monkstown’s captain and then he thanked the schools for their continued support and also praised the boys for their sportsmanship in all the matches today and he hoped they all enjoyed the day and continued playing rugby.
Ophir Youth Teams are now training at Mountpleasant pitches at Ballysillan on wed nights from 6.30pm – 8pm. All Year 8 and above are welcome, contact Gavin Robinson on 07814310694 for more details.
