Under 13 challenge match, Monaghan RFC 33 – 14 Royal School Armagh. A good contest played in perfect conditions, Monaghan struggled in the early stages of the game and had possession turned over far too often by a well drilled Armagh side but quick thinking from prop Oisín Murphy saw him break the deadlock with an excellent try out wide. Armagh however responded quickly with a converted try from short range after a series of errors from the Monaghan backs. Monaghan started to knuckle down and were soon rewarded with a try under the sticks by the unstoppable Dean Wilson, converted by Oisín Campbell. H/T score 12 – 7. Monaghan again started poorly, allowing Armagh to turn over some good possession but when the visitors’ forwards got to grips with the game, centres Dean Wilson and Michael Savage scored a try a piece inside 5 minutes, both converted by Oisín Campbell. Royal School however weren’t for surrendering on their home turf and again punished Monaghan with a deserved converted try after being camped on the Monaghan try line for a number of phases. Unfortunately their dominance was short lived and a superb break from Karl McKenna set scrum half Jamie Sherlock up for the try of the match, with Campbell again providing the extra 2 points. Many things to work on but overall a decent team performance with standout displays from Ciarán Winsryg and James Treanor in the forwards and in the backs I think the scoreline speaks for itself. Well done lads. Training Wednesday at 7pm.
