Virginia Rugby Club presents MMA Fight Night for FB click HERE
8 UFC-style bouts in octagon cage followed by live music from Raglans
July 11th 8pm Tickets €20 presale
Virginia Rugby Clubs senior team concluded their playing season at the beginning of May. But rather than enjoying the extra free time, most of the team have switched codes and taken up the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Barry Ogelsby, Kyuzo Gym, Glasnevin, is charged with the difficult task of converting these rugby players into MMA fighters. All the training will culminate in a fundraising fight night at The Lakeside Manor Hotel in Virginia on July 11th (the same night Conor McGregor fights for the UFC featherweight belt in Las Vegas) with Irish indie rock band Raglans also playing live in what promises to be an amazing night of entertainment.
The participants will have nowhere to hide when they are pitted against each other in the octagon cage on July 11th. Doors open at 8pm with the first fight commencing at 9pm. Most of the rugby players have no martial arts experience, so for entertainment purposes there will also be demonstration bouts on the night from fully trained fighters from Kyuzo Gym. When the fighting concludes, Raglans will be performing live to an expected sell out crowd. Tickets are only €20 and are available from the Hotel reception.
All the training takes place in Kyuzo Gym in Glasnevin. The lads have adapted well in this fantastic 2,500 square foot gym where fighters have competed in MMA since 2005. The gym is fully equipped with all the mats, bags, padded cage walls and gear needed to shape the ultimate fighter. Barry, the head coach at Kyuzo, holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Taekwondo!
All funds raised are going to Virginia Rugby Club development. Virginia Rugby club is one of the fastest growing rugby clubs in Ireland with the highest number of registered youth players in all of Ulster. A crucial second pitch is currently under development leaving the club in need of critical funding. All support is greatly appreciated and the committee has already witnessed much generosity from many sponsors. However, further sponsorship is needed and if anyone is interested they can contact MMA@rfcvirginia.com.
Dublin based indie rock group Raglans have enjoyed great success since their formation in 2011. Last year, they released their self titled debut album, Raglans, which went to number 5 in the Irish charts, number 1 in the Irish indie charts and made numerous appearances on European charts. They have toured Ireland, UK, Europe and even Australia and played at all the biggest Irish festivals including Electric Picnic and Sea Sessions. Virginia Rugby Club is delighted to add such a fantastic act to their event in what promises to be an amazing nights entertainment.
Everyone will be just home in bed when Dubliner Conor McGregor takes on Jose Aldo for the UFC featherweight belt in Las Vegas. Coverage of UFC 189 starts at 3am and is available live on Setanta Sports. ‘Notorious’ is not expected to fight until 5.30am concluding a ferocious night of MMA action.
