The idea for the event originated from two brothers, Scott and Stuart Nelson whose father recently passed away after a five year battle with cancer. The match will be played in memory of family members and friends of the teams who we have lost through cancer, and for those who are currently battling with the disease.
The world record attempt will see two mixed gender tag rugby teams of 15 players, the Mengal Taggers and The Tropics going head-to-head for around 30 hours non-stop. The teams will be captained by the two brothers and the players involved represent a number of different rugby clubs throughout the province including Dromore, Banbridge, Grosvenor, Ballymoney, Dungannon, Malone, Queens and Cooke. A huge number of volunteers will also participate including referees, physios, nutritionists, media experts, chiropodists and stewards who will lend their services to the record attempt.
The match itself will take place as part of the Cancer Research Relay for Life at Banbridge Rugby Club on 9th and 10th of June 2012. The two teams are trying to raise £10,000 which will help fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. We would be so grateful if you would help us in our goal to raise as much money for Cancer Research UK as we possibly can and we would love to see you on game day!
We are so grateful to have received corporate support from Volkswagen, McGrigors, PowerNI, Mars and Akuma Rugby for the event. Alongside this, Banbridge RFC, Shoefair Sports, Wilsons Yard and Banbridge District Council have been integral in providing assistance for the world record attempt.
If you wish to support us please donate to a player or a team below. Your donation will change lives and we thank you for every penny you give!
