Matty Rea Returns with Two-Year Contract Extension
It’s always pleasing when a new signee becomes a part of the Ulster team. Yet, what can often be even more intriguing is when a contract extension takes place, and that’s precisely what has taken place with back-rower Matty Rea, who has just secured himself a two-year extension. This means that Rea will remain a part of the Kingspan Stadium until June 2022 at the very least.
Rea is one of the Ulster Academy success stories, signing his professional contract with the rugby team in 2017. He has already played 14 games this season, proving that Ulster has the necessary faith in him to carry out his role to perfection. That’s not to say that he hasn’t had his share of downfalls though, being banned for four weeks in October 2018 following a red card during a game against Connacht.
Of course, the contract extension definitively means that Ulster is happy to keep Rea on its roster, and that can only spell good things for the 26-year-old from Ballymena.

Moore Promoted from Academy
While Rea has signed his contract extension, Ulster is also promoting Stewart Moore from the Academy. The centre player has agreed to a three-year contract with the team, although he will spend one year under a Developmental contract to begin with. After that time period, he will be upgraded to a Senior Professional contract, which will last him through the proceeding two seasons.
Moore first made an appearance for Ulster against Leinster in December of 2019, where he has been a successful pick for both inside and outside centre positions. It was Moore who also made quite the impact during Ireland’s U20 Rugby World Cup tournament last summer, contributing towards the success of his team in a big way.
Speaking of both the contract extension of Rea and the upgrade for Moore, McFarland said that both players have done well, mentioning that both have come through the Ulster Academy and sub-Academy to become a part of the professional team. “…it’s fantastic to see more players from our pathway starting to come through to the senior ranks”, he commented. He then went on to state that Matty “has been a dynamic carrier” for Ulster throughout this season, “pushing all aspects of his game forward”.
