Human Race Events – “Mudman”. Duathlon No #2. (07/12/2013)
“So last Saturday saw me take myself beyond the uncomfortable and into the unknown. I had found out about “Mudman” about 3 weeks prior to the event and realising I had not been on a mountain bike for 10 years or ever run this distance in one go before should probably had meant i ignored it. However, anyone who has had a life constant injuries like myself and your rugby career has been on hold for pretty much 2 years give or take a few games it is not always a case of wanting to compete at something, it is a case of having to compete at anything just to keep you ticking over. And so 3 weeks before the event, preparations kind of began.
I had been doing the 5k park runs and a couple of bike rides since the Bath Duathlon but nothing crazy and with weight training taking a massive knock due to my shoulder injury I felt it was time to up my training to whatever level i could manage. My calfs had been playing up due to the amount of km i was putting in running in a short space of time. And in most circumstances i would avoid rushing into training for anything as without proper preparation you will always be underprepared. It actually took until about 5pm on the Friday evening after going for a coffee with my 2 triathlon friends Billy & Frenella to decide that i was going to compete. So I rang the organisers if i could come down early in the morning and sign up, to which they agreed and they also kindly passed me the phone number of a man called Tony to which i could borrow a mountain bike from him for £40. Genius i thought. So, a late night cinema trip and an alarm (My mother) at 5:20am Saturday morning was put in place and I packed my bag ready to head off to the army base in Chamberley (Surrey) where i would be competing. I am actually very grateful for my Mum coming with me to support me, I am not a fan of having people watch me at anything that i am not going to do well in or used to (rugby) so this was added pressure that i knew whatever happened i could not quit the race. I would finish it.” for the full blog follow this link http://www.edmfitness.co.uk/human-race-events-mudman-duathlon-2-07122013-2/
