Magnificent Malone win emphatically over Dungannon
A superb team performance saw a young Malone team come of age on Friday evening displaying style, passion and guts to defeat Dungannon by 36-13.
Malone hosted rivals Dungannon in the opening game of this seasons Ulster Bank Division 1B clash, The game was Billed as a Friday Night under the lights game and this added to the already highly charged atmosphere.
This was always going to be a tough encounter against a seasoned Dungannon side who last season played so well and were in contention for promotion right up to the end of the season.
On the flip side Malone were the new boys on the block, with a young team full of promise, talent and ambition the scene was set for what proved to be a spectacular night of rugby. The large support despite earlier foul weather greeted both teams loudly.
It was Dungannon that took the game by storm in the opening ten minutes and they mounted attack after attack using their forwards and back line to good use, however the Malone defence was very solid and some excellent tackling prevented Dungannon from scoring.
Dungannon scored a penalty on 13 minutes through Nelson and Niall O’Connor replied with 2 penalties on 15 and 25 minutes to give Malone a 6-3 lead.
On 28 minutes Malone scored when after a break by Taylor Acheson from deep inside the Malone half the ball was passed through several hands before a nice inside pass to Captain Glen Moore who ran in to set down under the posts. The conversion from Niall O’Connor saw Malone ahead by 13-3. Niall O’Connor kicked his third penalty on 30 minutes to extend the Malone lead to 16-3. Both sides play hard entertaining rugby for the remainder of the half without further score.
The second half saw Dungannon reduce the arrears with a second Nelson penalty score now 16-6. Six minutes later Malone replied with an O’Connor penalty 19-6. On 55 minutes Alan O’Connor touched down on his debut for the club, his namesake Niall added the conversion, score now 26-6.
Malone now playing some dynamic and powerful rugby through the forwards and the back keen to move the ball saw a further score ten minutes later when after great play by forwards and backs winger Chris Leathem made a break and bulldozed the Dungannon fullback to power over in the corner, no conversion on this occasion, Malone extend their lead to 31 -6.
Dungannon upped their game and after a period of pressure the Malone line was crossed for the only time in the game when McCarroll scored, his try was converted by Nelson, score now 31-13.
Malone now spurned on by the home support made one final effort and were rewarded with the 4th and bonus point try when Neill Alcorn scored an unconverted try to give Malone a massive victory over Dungannon by 36-13.
