Malone are to represent the IRFU this week-end in the Amsterdam 7’s tourament. I have enclosed some information regarding this prestigious tournament.

The Amsterdam sevens story so far

The Amsterdam Sevens has been a highlight on the Rugby Calendar since 1972 when the AAC Rugby Club organised the first tournament. It has grown over the years to become one of the biggest Sevens tournaments in the world attracting top teams from around around the world. In recent years we have enjoyed teams from South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Australia, USA, Canada, Argentina, Moldova, Georgia, Serbia, Czech Republic, Norway, Denmark, Kenya, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, Switzerland, Bahrain, Dubai, Republic of Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland as well as invitational teams who draw their players from around the world.

The teams vary widely in strength. We often have national teams (usually playing under an assumed name) who play in the tournament as part of their preparations for their international matches. Among the national teams we have hosted are Scotland, South Africa, Moldova, Czech Republic, Zimbabwe, Netherlands, Belgium, Georgia, England Ladies, New Zealand Ladies, Norwegian Ladies, Czech Republic Ladies etc. Top invitational sides include Samurai, Mel’s Exiles, Susies Saloon and the Marauders. There are also many club sides and social sides.

Saturday is the day for sorting the wheat from the chaffe. Teams play in pools to decide which tournament they will play in on Sunday. It also gives a chance for the minnows to play against the top teams and players. The Elephants, a student team from Eindhoven, are still telling anyone who will listen that they only lost to the South African team by 15 points more than the French team did a week later. On Sunday the tournament splits into 3 for the Men’s Tournament and 2 for the Ladies Tournament plus the Veterans Tournament. Teams are knocked out throughout Sunday until the finals.
