We ran a 10’s rugby tournament on Saturday with 6 sides in the main competition and 4 Vets teams. The event was held at Rainey Old Boys RFC in Magherafelt.
The main competition involved 3 Rainey teams along with Bangor RFC, Cookstown RFC and Deviance, a team managed by a former Rainey man Wilbert Leacock and they won the event. The trophy for the winners is the Keith Suiter Memorial Trophy.
The Vets sectioned included 2 English sides, The Punjabi Pirates and Hampstead Heath, along with the Rainey Vets and The Perennials. The Vets section was won by the Perennials and they received the Henry O’Neill Memorial Trophy.
The event was organised by Brian Smyth, John Smyth, Neal Suiter, Charlie Simpson, Kevin O’Kane, Chris Campbell and Dylan Davies. The event is in memory of Neal Suiter’s father Keith who was a great clubman and played for Rainey for many years. We normally just had a Rainey select versus a Suiter select annually but decided to go for a 10’s tournament this year and hope to continue and expand the event for many years to come.
It was a massive success, the weather was excellent and we had face painting and bouncy castles for the kids. We also had a BBQ going all day and then the highlight, a hog roast at around 6pm, supplied by The Whole Hog NI. Special thanks must go to the referee’s who were fantastic, Clem Bassett, Oisin Quinn and Scott Rankin.
All proceeds from the day went to Macmillan Cancer and UNICEF.
A special thanks to David Shaw photography for taking all the photos on the day.
