The 1st XV of London Irish Amateur RFC ‘The Wild Geese’ have completed another successful league programme. They finished 2nd in London Div 1 South with a record of played 26 won 21 lost 3 and drawn 2 which produces a play off for promotion to National 3 this Saturday 23rd April 3pm against Sidcup RFC, the runners up in London 1 North.
Director of Rugby Chris Magowan commented “to be in contention for a consecutive promotion is testimony to the group of guys we have at Irish. It is predominantly the same squad that were league champions last year, hard work in pre season has helped us navigate a mammoth league and cup programme, this Saturday will be our 31st game of the Season”
The Wild Geese are captained by Dungannon lock David Reilly and feature sons of former Irish Internationals in Sam McKinney and Karl Becker, all three players fathers will be flying into London to be in attendance on Saturday at Sunbury.
David added “home advantage in a one off game will be key, we have created a fortress at Sunbury over the past 2 years and given the support we anticipate this Saturday it will take a very good side to beat us” that Sidcup will be anything but is not in question. They have a big pack and will look to create dominance up front against a lighter Irish 8. Irish will have to rely on gaining parity to release a talented back division, the team have scored 114 tries this season including 10 last week in the final league game where they trounced Thanet Wanderers RFC away 63-0 to secure their play off spot.
Tired bodies will have to wait another week for a well earned rest however as the team try and retain the Surrey Trophy against Sutton & Epsom RFC on Monday 2nd May.
