Once the referee found his spare whistle the Section 3 Junior League match between Lisburn 3rds and Grosvenor got under way. It was a miserable start for Lisburn both in terms of the weather and the penalty count, with five penalty’s awarded to Grosvenor in the opening ten minutes of the game. Some ill discipline by the Lisburn pack around the rucks was soon put in order by Captain and hooker Honi Manso, with the support of another front row veteran Matt Brown . Richard Dawson the new star scrum half on the three’s was also on hand to give his advice. Lisburn seemed to settle after this initial phase, however the match never seemed to flow for either side, and this was mostly due to the inclement weather making the ball difficult to handle.Grosvenor managed to quite a few kicks, this was fortunate for the Lisburn, but scored a try putting Lisburn behind. Getting closer to the half time whistle, a controversial high tackle saw one of Lisburns centres going to the sin bin.

The second half started well for Lisburn with some great darting runs from the centre, and several phases linking together well, Lisburn always seemed to have Grosvenor under threat, but the much anticipated finish didn’t materialize, and this was disappointing for the pack after their extreme effort on the Grosvenor line. Frustration broke out early in the half and no less than three players were binned, 2 from Lisburn and 1 from Grosvenor. Lisburn weren’t the only side to have problems at the try line with a Grosvenor player dropping the ball just before a touchdown. With the score at 18 – 5 with ten minutes to go Lisburn managed to get a score, and conversion making it 18 – 12. With much of the last 10 minutes of the game played at mid field neither side had the opportunity to score, and the final result remained 18-12 to Grosvenor. Despite the score Lisburn 3rds showed some promise, and with a bit of squad training and practice on the set piece they could go far. Much talent was witnessed from the touchline, but unfortunately the anticipated scores didn’t materialize.

The next League game for the 3rds is against Donaghadee away next Saturday 8th October.
