Minor League (North) City of Derry 4XV v Limavady 3XV Judges Road, Derry 22nd September 2012
Limavady 3XV continued their impressive start to the season with a hard fought win against City of Derry at Judges Road. The Derry men started the stronger but impressive defending showed that the Roe Valley men were not going to be an easy pushover.
So much so that it was Limavady who got off the mark first. An intricate move let winger Johnny McKeegan to cross in the corner, but the resulting kick proved far more difficult. Derry got back in the game straight away with an easy penalty.
The away side weren’t going to be deterred, and some great work from the pack allowed Ferris to score, with Alan Steen converting. There was still time for another try, and the home side ensured they were relatively close with a converted try of their own. HT 10-12.
The all blacks started the second half much like the first, defending their line, but a counter attack soon ensued. Derry gave away a penalty, and Steen duly obliged with the 3 points. After another penalty conceded on the half way, many of the coaching staff and supporters were confused with captain Neill Moore opted for the posts, but C. Mullan stuck a beautiful kick, to leave the home team needing 2 scores for the win.
But Limavady were just too strong and after a lot of possession and pressure in the home side’s 22, Stuart Roddy crossed the whitewash and G. McLaughlin converted. Then straight from kickoff a mazy run from co-captain Glen Anderson, slid under the posts, leaving McLaughlin with an easy kick for a 22 point lead.
There was still time for Derry to get a consolation try at the death after some 10 minutes of trying to breach the epic Roesider defence. FT 15-32.
It has been an impressive start from Limavady, undefeated in their opening four games, and they will be hoping to continue this for as they again travel to the Maiden City next weekend to take Londonderry YMCA 2XV.
