Letterkenny RFC have announced that the new 1st XV captain is Karl Egan. Karl joined from Galway club Corinthians in 2011 and attends LYIT where he was also captain of the college rugby side last season. Karl represented Ireland youths and was also a member of the connacht academy. Letterkenny are delighted to have him as captain for the incoming season and he will be assisted by Convoy native Andrew Gibson in his role as vice captain. Both players lead by example on and off the pitch in both their committed style of play and their professional attitude towards training. The club is in no doubt that these are the men to lead this talented squad to success this season.
Speaking at the announcement last night club chairman Michael MacGinty declared himself delighted that Karl had agreed to lead the side and is looking forward to helping the squad achieve success this season. With the New Clubhouse opening soon and the 40th Anniversary next year this will be a great season for the club.
The first fixture of the season is the eagerly anticipated Gordon West cup match at home to Donegal Town on the 22nd September. K.O. 2.30pm
2ND XV CAPTAIN ANNOUNCED
Letterkenny RFC today announced that Ronan O’Donnell has agreed to captain the 2nd XV this year. Ronan has been a regular for the seconds for a number of seasons and is the ideal man to take over from Dave Doherty and Tony ‘Hitchkick’ McBride. However Ronan has worked very hard this pre season and is a regular at training so he may find himself on the first team before long so it is important that everyone helps out in organising the 2nd XV. The Seconds had a great start to the season beating City of Derry 45-17 and should be challenging for league honours this season. The next 2nd XV game is away to Tir Connail on the 06th October.
Dave Dohertys 2nd XV made a great start to their league campaign winning 45-17 against City of Derry at Judges road.
The game started with constant Letterkenny pressure aided by good clean set piece possession. From a scrum No 8 Shane McCart broke off and the ball was moved well through the centre until Jason Daley went through a gap and scored out on the right for the first score of the game. The Donegal men repeated the dose shortly after with Daley again touching down and this time Tony McBride knocked over the conversion. Derry came storming back and scored a good try of their own as a break down in communication in the Letterkenny defence caused the final line break after some sustained pressure. Derry came straight back from the kick off and were attacking in the 22 when the ball was turned over by great work from young Ben Mortimer and moved along the line to winger Casimir Abaka who went the length of the field to score under the posts for a seven pointer.
Letterkennys lineout was dominant at this stage with Mortimer providing a steady stream of possession off McGonagles throwing, and line-out possession was the source for the next score with strong running from Terence Gallagher rounded off by McCart for another converted score. There was still time for another try a piece before half time with Casimir getting over for his second converted try from Letterkenny. Half time score 31-12.
The second half saw Letterkenny playing up the hill into the wind and was going to be a much tougher 40 minutes, however the defence improved throughout the half with the team determined to finish off the good work of the first half and Jason Daley went over for his third try of the day to round off a classy performance. Derry got another score late on but Letterkenny finished on a high with Mortimer rounding off a superb performance by scoring the last try of the day.
The most impressive aspect of the game was Letterkennys fitness and from 1-15 the players were still getting off the deck and making their tackles right until the end. There were a number of outstanding performances but the excellent line-out work and tireless defensive performance of Ben Mortimer deserves special mention, while Mark Timoney carried tirelessly all day and Daley and Abaka looked deadly whenever they got the ball.
Great start for the seconds and attention now switches to the 1st xv and their cup match at home to Donegal on Saturday. K.O. 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome and your support is greatly appreciated by the team.
