Bread and your Health
IMG_89405167f7305f8b0.jpgBread : A Health Food
Our food is often too rich in sugars, simple carbohydrates and fats.
To counteract this tendancy, the European Food Information council (EUFIC) recommends a diet containing an optimum level of carbohydrates. This will help prevent body fat accumulation as carbohydrates have less calories weight for weight than fat. They are also used by the body as fuel to burn fat.
Studies have found that carbohydrates work quickly to aid satiety and that those consuming high carbohydrate diets are less likely to overeat. It has been shown that diets including plenty of carbohydrate-rich foods appear to help regulate the appetite.
In the context of these recommendations, it is evident that bread is an ideal food as it is rich in complex carbohydrate (starch) and in fibre. These slow down digestion and encourage satiety thus helping to avoid snacking.
However, thats not all! bread also contains protein, several vitamins of the B group, Vitamin E and minerals such as phosphorus, magnesium and potassium.
Bread : A Lasting Energy Source
Bread is a valuable food source as it supplies the organs with energy. In comparison to simple carbohydrates, which are mostly found in sugary foods, complex carbohydrates are absorbed slowly which enables energy to be progressively released in the body.
For the brain, in particular, a diet high in complex carbohydrates is essential. even though this organ only represents 2% of our bodyweight it consumes 20& of the energy derived from our food. It is primordial that our glucose intake be very regular. Only complex carbohydrates, abundant in bread, meet this requirement.
