‘Fun begins at 50’ A east Belfast contemporary rear courtyard built for entertaining, built May-July 2012

Design Brief
Having recently committed a large amount of capital towards enhancing their kitchen living space, the client’s clear intention was not to sell or move to another property until they retired. In simple terms, the client sought a garden to be designed to reflect the contemporary style so clearly developed in their recently completed kitchen and dining area as a major design influence for their intended new rear garden. Key points suggested for consideration for the design’s adoption were as follows:
• Align to their high aspirations in terms of good quality design and construction to complement their recently completed kitchen space.
• To create a multi-functional ‘party space’ that they could be proud of, and to enable them to entertain both family and friends.
• To somehow remove the view of their neighbour’s unsightly single storey extension currently under construction. This extension was starting to dominate their new kitchen and dining room views, and created a new shady garden zone.
• The design had to somehow draw the observer’s eye away from the neighbour’s overhanging mature conifers.

• The clients were open to all ideas proposed by the designer and the designer was basically given a blank canvas.
• To the north side of the property was a narrow unattractive driveway, and the client was keen that the designer would look at options to freshen this area up.
• The client also suggested that the designer develop some proposals for the front garden area, and if deemed strong enough and within budget, then the front garden may also be built at the same time.
The original brief focussed solely on the rear garden, however, as the initial design brief meeting developed, it became clear that the client was interested in a holistic design and subsequent build package, provided the concept design met their design brief requirements and that the final build costs were achievable based upon their expectation that the designer met and produced a suitable attractive design with an element of whoa-factor
Contemporary east Belfast front garden, built 2012, incorporates an asymmetrical grid, a striking zigzag blue limestone pathway and front evening patio with tiered raised planters, a dry river bed/ drainage sink and various grasses giving constant movement and forms a dramatic central bed, which is designed to give patio privacy & allow access to and easy maintenance of raised beds. The client was delighted with their new urban oasis of calm. & this garden was described recently by an eminent London based garden designer as “ having an air of show garden design & build quality”
