Current British& Irish Lions players Alun Wyn Jones and Alex Cuthbert along with former England captain, Lewis Moody today launched a money-can’t-buy opportunity competition for Britain and Ireland’s ultimate rugby fans.
Microsoft’s search engine Bing and airline Qantas have teamed up to send four of the most passionate and patriotic British and Irish rugby fans across the world to support The Lions as they take on the Aussies and do battle down under.
Not only will they get to experience the excitement on the pitch first hand, The Mane Event team will also be called upon to do their country proud as they take on local Aussies in a series of hilarious and outlandish challenges across Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales – designed to test their dedication to the limit.
Lewis Moody says, “Weeks and weeks of training go into getting match-fit for The Tour but on game day, one of the most important factors spurring us on to victory is the knowledge that our fans are cheering us on.
“And don’t forget, the team will be away from home for more than six weeks – that’s a long time to be apart from friends and family, which makes the fans’ support even more important. We’re really pleased we’re going to have four of our most passionate supporters along for the journey, cheering on the team and putting the Aussies to the test.”
Winger Alex Cuthbert, making his debut in The Lions squad this year, adds, “The 2013 Lions team is a force to be reckoned with – and our fans are a force to be reckoned with too. We want to let the Australians know that The Lions are coming to win this year and show them what we’re made of, both on and off the pitch. We can’t wait to see who makes the cut for The Mane Event team.
“With the chance to catch all of the games, get closer to the team and see some of Australia’s most famous sights too, it’s an opportunity of a lifetime for any super-fan. Are you rugby-mad enough to join us on The Tour as a Mane contender?”
To enter, all fans need to do is head to www.LionsManeEvent.com and test their rugby knowledge with The Mane Test, which quizzes people on their rugby knowledge, rugby passion and general knowledge, then upload a photo and video telling us why they deserve to be part of The Mane Event supporting The Lions in Australia this June and July.
The best eight entries will be selected on 24th May – two from each country (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales), will then go head to head in securing the most votes from the public and show how passionate they really are about taking this trip of a lifetime, thanks to Bing and Qantas. The final four will be announced on 13th June and will fly out in time for the first Test and to take on the first of The Mane Event challenges.

We got the chance to interview Alex Cuthbert this morning on the up coming tour and hearing about selection, all below
Q Did you know beforehand you would be selected: You literally don’t have an idea, you dream about it, being included, I guess the Lions came on the radar after the Six Nations I thought, this is my chance to get on this and keep playing with Wales and maybe get selected.
We were in training and we finished about 11.15 and they had the announcement on pause in the team room in the Blues, we all ran up and they pressed play so no one knew and then I’m sitting there with my team mates and my name is called out!
The tension of the last few weeks since the England game and then just waiting for the announcement and then getting nervous then for my name to come up and then i’m in. About 10 minutes later I just screamed, my dad called me and he was crying and then the last few months came out so a nice moment with my dad on the phone it was an aswesome me feeling which i don’t think i will have that exact feeling again.
I’m looking forward to it, meeting all the boys that I’m so used to playing against training with the likes of Brian O’Driscoll, I’m there for a job and on the same squad as him. I’m there for a reason and now we have to get on with it and it be great to play with legends like Paul O’Connell.
