Instonians u17, 42 – Lurgan 10

Played in pleasant conditions at Shaw’s Bridge on Sturday 29 Janaury 2011 Lurgan drew first blood with a well taken try after just 5 minutes. To their credit Instonians hit back 5 minutes later when Ryan Law scored an unconverted try after a quick penalty and then Robbie Alexander proved unstoppable from close range to ease Inst into the lead at 12-5. Full back Charlie McKerr who was full of running all day scored a further unconverted try midway through the half.

Lurgan had a strong scrum and lineout and a good kicking game which kept them well in the contest. They mounted a sustained period of pressure inside the Instonian’s 22 which led to a try when Inst ran out of defenders. This was just before half-time and it looked like “game on” again. Instonians, however, had different ideas and scored again allmost from the kick-off when winger Luke Watson rounded his opposite number after a fluent back attack.

This left it 22-10 at half-time. After the restart Instonians continued to mount pressure and even Lurgan’ strong scrum began to creak. By mid-way insecond half Instonians had added further tries through Robbie Alexander and number 8 Hayden Nightingale and well struck penalty by scrum half Andrew Keane. The game was now over as a contest and it became a scrappy affair with both sides making unforced errors. As the game entered injury time Instonians mounted an attack from far out which ended in flanker Ryan Law scoring his second try, which, when converted, left the game 42-10 in Instonian’s favour.
